    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

I would guess it's the sounder for the door alarms. I have to agree that two buttons on the exterior in the centre of the doorway is a bit of an odd choice! I would have understood if they were mounted at the outer edges of the door!

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

All of the media reports & press releases explicitly refer to 'sales' of petrol and diesel cars/vans, not manufacture. That seems fairly clear cut to me that you will not be allowed to sell any new ICE only vehicle after the deadline (which in practice probably means not being able to register...

    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

Only if you don't have bogie mounted motors, which I don't think anything on the underground has had for a while. If you have bogie mounted motors and mount the inverters remotely then the only connection you need across the cars is cable, and that's easy enough

    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

Most of those obsolete electronics are being replaced as I understand it, as part of the Central Line Improvement Programme which should set the 1992TS up for a while yet

    Croydon Tram Shortage.

The Urbos has got a bit of a reputation for cracks which take it out of service however (just ask Birmingham!) - perhaps not the ideal replacement for a fleet already struggling with subpar availability.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Not only that, but an additional engine on each 5 car train as well, leading to a fairly big change to the arrangement underfloor!

Heat pumps and other domestic carbon reduction measures

That is a disadvantage of mini-splits, however there are plenty of non gas-based solutions for producing hot-water including solar thermal, immersion/storage heaters, and even little undersink units. There is also no particular reason that you couldn't just put an 'indoor unit' inside a water...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

As I understood it, the existing software was incredibly old (originating in the first gen electrostars) so whilst it was functional it was felt rather limiting and development of a clean-sheet software was desired. The use of it as the base for the 345s was a (in hindsight, wise even if not...

Heat pumps and other domestic carbon reduction measures

The power output of a given radiator is dependant on it's surface area and the temperature difference between the heating medium and the air in the room. A 'delta T' of say 45 degrees (60c radiator and 15c air temp) gives you almost twice the output compared to a delta T of 25 degrees for a...

Northern line train evacuation at Clapham Common

It may as well be locked however when the train is full & standing during the rush hour, but this would again be no different to a walkthrough train at that point! Interesting to see the BBC reporting on the official TfL report this morning:

Northern line train evacuation at Clapham Common

Visible smoke, sure, but you cannot see smells. I've been on a few northern line trains that have smelt smoldery and put me (and several others in the car) on edge.

    Differences between a 158 and a 159?

    There are(/were) 110 158/9 vehicles in SWRs fleet - 20x 158 & 90(/87 now) 159s R1 & R3 are different variants of the Cummins NTA855 engine with either 350 or 400bhp respectively

    'Smart Motorways'

I can't disagree, but I fail to see how the issue there is the smart motorway, rather than the sheer volume of traffic?

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

As I remember it, the 345s use the same software base as the 'Gen 2' Electrostars (378 onwards) as it was a more mature platform from which to deliver the more complicated requirements around interfacing to 3 different signalling systems and the performance risks to delivering service in the...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

As Rock Rail are a private entity who've funded these trains, no public money has been spent on them surely? Eventually it'll be recouped in leasing costs but at the time being they're no particular drain on the public beyond the life-extension works to the 455s and the comparatively costs...

RailAdventure Power Cars being sent out in groups of four. Is this a waste of resources?

Usually because whilst selling a loco will turn a profit for one year's accounts, it will negatively impact them going forward when they cannot win work because of a lack of locos (or so the theory goes) Expensive to buy, or to run? To buy they would have been the value of ~70t scrap steel +...

RailAdventure Power Cars being sent out in groups of four. Is this a waste of resources?

Technical possibility & financial viability are two very separate things Yes they've sold quite a few through the years but haven't sold many recently and don't appear to be offering any either on the market. Sure if you bid high enough they'd probably consider it, but if you can buy something...

RailAdventure Power Cars being sent out in groups of four. Is this a waste of resources?

When the alternative 'use' was baked bean cans... Not as if they would have been hauling passenger services instead 'stored' does not mean usable. 86s are (as noted) useless on these type of runs off of the electrified sections GBRf are having to bring in locos from the continent because...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Poor choice of example there - neither the 455 nor 458 gangways are publicly accessible, crew use only! The 5 car 701s were like-for-like replacements of the 707s, I vaguely recall something around a few early morning & late night services on windsor side running as 5 cars before doubling up...
