    Permanent middle shifts

o_O Probably best to consider your offer and not go driving if you have doubts over shift work. Surely the question of shift work came up during the application process (or have you not applied yet?) Once qualified it is possible to do permanent early or late shifts but this is dependent on...

    ITV Trouble on the tracks

The opening titles always make me smile. There is a very short clip of less than two seconds from a forward facing camera. (Immediately after the bit where the bloke at the side of the train days "im trying to meet my future wife ") It gives the impression that this train in hammering along at...

    Rail jobs hierarchy

In my experience the Driver not only does their job but also has to check that everyone else has done theirs correctly; from dispatcher to guard and even the signaller. Not many people looking out for the Driver other than the Driver. Having said that the hierarchy can be different depending on...

    Rail jobs hierarchy

I think you misunderstand the meaning of two on the buzzer. That is not the guard telling the driver what to do. It is the guard telling the driver that his/her duties are complete and, as far as the guard is concerned, the train is ready to depart. The driver then decides when to depart.

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

The doors will close automatically if stood at a platform for any length of time to stop the a/c trying to cool the whole of Manchester rather than just that vehicle. Can be opened again by pushing the button until closed for dispatch by the guard.

    Northern pay scale

What do you mean 'It's like getting blood from a stone'? I disagree. Unlike most private sector jobs the salaries of train drivers are quite easy to find. Who have you asked? Look out for the job ads on their website where salary details are clearly given. Basically.... It depends on what...

    Trainee Train Driver, Managers interview.

Go with an example of when you have used one of these techniques though. For example, If you just say "I would break a long journey into small chunks....." then the bs alarm rings. If you say "I drove overnight to Edinburgh recently and to help me concentrate I broke the journey into small...

    Trainee Train Driver, Managers interview.

Did the Manager ask "How do you specifically manage to concentrate?" or did he/she ask "how do you think other people would concentrate?" Because, if it's the former then it sounds like you don't have answer and maybe that's because you don't do it. And surely thats the whole point of the...

    DMUs running on one engine

An engine overheating is one possible explanation. Low level coolant or hydrostatic oil could cause an engine to overheat. The engine will idle until cooled and then burst into life again until it overheats once more and reverts to idle again.

    Blackpool - Manchester Electrification

Well according to my Late Notice Case this speed restriction is still in place. So should be 75 max. (Well thats what I'll be doing anyway )

    Blackpool - Manchester Electrification

t Ah, nice one. Thanks for the info. I'm on annual leave at the mo' so no doubt I'll see that when I'm back on the job next week.

    Blackpool - Manchester Electrification

There is a 75mph blanket speed restriction on the Up and Down Bolton lines between Salford Crescent and Euxton Junction so not just yet. They just about get to 100 between Leyland and Wigan NW.

    The Northern stopper at Stoke-on-Trent.

Northern drivers from Picc sign all the south end shunts. Having said that it's a fairly unusual move that most drivers will have never done. Even on pass-out for the route these shunts are only done theoretically. So I guess the driver would have a quick look at the route map as a reminder and...

Person under train near Heald Green

To be honest , if a person has been hit by a train, from the Drivers point of view, I hope it was a suicide rather than an accident. It's an awful thing to say I know. I just think dealing with a suicide must be traumatic enough but an accident is a whole different level. I guess relatives and...

    Arriva Rail North DOO

Are you suggesting that the Driver and Guard just keep quiet and don't report it at all? That's a very slippery slope to go down.

    Altrincham Tracks

I believe a set of points was damaged by a train because they had not gone over fully.
