Signal upgrade set to modernise Cornwall’s railway

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-68585561 The railway signs [sic] are being replaced.

    Workington bridge closed? (29/02/2024)

It is not a necessary characteristic of absolute block that it can be signalled in only one direction, the platform road at Maryport being an example.

Query Transporting Wool by train in the Victorian Era

Yes, indeed. Ships would have an orders port, if coming from the south typically Queenstown (Cobh) or Falmouth, where they would receive instructions for discharge of cargoes traded during the voyage. In later years sailing ships would often then be tugged to discharge by steam.

Should ScotRail take over operation of the Chieftain and Aberdonian?

I wonder if the OP can establish an evidential base from LNER rather than posters on this board for the first sentence of the first post.

LNER: London Kings Cross to Inverness: no January services?

Only my accurate memory, I am afraid, as I shared in thr incredulity at the time.

LNER: London Kings Cross to Inverness: no January services?

The idea actually emerged from the recently installed SNP Scottish Government that did not want train services running the length of the country that it did not have jurisdiction over. The idea of a compulsory change of train went down very badly with the Scottish people north of Edinbugh and...

LNER: London Kings Cross to Inverness: no January services?

The security of the future of the Chieftain is a sensitive issue in the north of Scotland, one to let loose in the media and with politicians. A TOC currently under the control of a the British Government planning to cut the only cross-border daytime link between the the Highlands and London...

Trivia - stationless towns with the nearest station in a different county

This is an interesting one. When the line reopened I wondered whether Tweedbank restored the railway to Roxburghshire as well as Selkirkshire. I knew it had to be close, as Melrose is in the former and Gala in the latter. The answer when I looked into it is that it lies in the parish of Melrose...

Trivia - stationless towns with the nearest station in a different county

Peebles (Peeblesshire) > Stow (Midlothian); Kinross (Kinross-shire) > Lochgelly (Fife). These were the administrative counties when Peebles and Kinross closed and remain in legal existence as registration counties; the current council areas would be anachronistic.

    Stations with roads inside

The Carlisle ramp used to be the access for the heavy postal traffic and also motorail vehicles. In the postal days the gates were always open. Edited for clarity.

Former station names still in use today

DMUs displayed Dundee Tay Bridge until they were given new destination blinds some time about 1980 as I remember. A run through of the old blinds by then was a journey to the past.

Former station names still in use today

It is worth bearing in mind that Citadel was the only passenger station before the end of C19, which militated against the need to keep using a determiner much longer than in most other instances. I have never heard the station referred to as Citadel in conversation in my 40 years in the area...

Former station names still in use today

Of course if you wanted a particular part of the town, you would not be an unsuspecting visitor. It would have been ideal for the Brake in its day. :D Edited for typo.

Former station names still in use today

Perpetuated, of course, in the signal box. It was a good decision by BR to change Whitehaven Corkickle simply to Corckickle and Whitehaven Bransty to Whitehaven. An unsuspecting visitor looking for the sights of the town would have jumped the wrong way picking Corkickle.

    Scotrail disruption

Yesterday I travelled from Inverness to Edinburgh on the Chieftain. There was a 40mph limit from about Struan to Stanley Jcn. The guard sounded quite to enjoy announcing it was providing the only direct service from Inverness to Edinburgh of the day.

    Storm Agnes - Wednesday 27th September 2023

Carlisle to Edinburgh: 1616, 1818, 2218 TPE departures all cancelled; 2018 diverted to Glasgow, all 'forecast severe weather'. Meanwhile the 1702, 1905 and 2105 Avanti departures all ran. A typical lame TPE performance.

When was "London" added to the names of all the termini in the capital?

In fact if you go back far enough the custom was geographical name followed by any other designation in brackets. Hence my BR ScR 1948 timetable, for example, uses London (Euston).

Delivery of the railway's diesel fuel by road

Gas oil is duty rebated diesel, colloquially 'red' (dyed) diesel, as opposed to DERV (diesel-engined road vehicle) oil or 'white' (undyed) diesel at full excise duty.
