Car hire Easter Monday in SW London (and bank holidays generally)

Many thanks for reply, I did try the airports in the end - the prices were stupidly high, around £450 for the weeks rental even for an ordinary bog standard car. I suspect price hiking due to bank holidays plus Easter school holidays. Oh well, it's back to trains and taxis this week!

Car hire Easter Monday in SW London (and bank holidays generally)

Hoping someone can help here, Google has failed me unfortunately. My car's in with the mechanics and is broken, was hoping to get it back yesterday (Thurs) but the job they did didn't fix it. I'm in SW London. Could do with a rental car for next week's work but will need to pick it up on...

    M6 Toll

I thought the same the first time, but the second time was just after using it with a PIN, must be an equipment malfunction

    M6 Toll

I have to be a bit careful as I'm still within the 2 years probation for new drivers (6 points and you're out) but I think this is true, most traffic does over 80mph on the M6 toll. If i do the usual 10% plus speedo overread I get overtaken (I try not to do more than that). So I guess the normal...

    M6 Toll

It's a very nice road, very smooth to drive and often empty, as a recently qualified driver I haven't yet been on the normal M6 through the outskirts of Brum, on my three trips so far from London to the NW the M6 has always had some blockage according to radio traffic reports. I would say it's...

    M6 Toll

Didn't work for me last time I was there - had to put the card in the slot then it spat it back out - Early July, southbound toll plaza, full length £8.20 Of course could have been user error! Also if you need a receipt I make sure to press the button before putting the card in, not sure if...

ULEZ Expansion (and being forced into changing cars).

Apparently my 20 year old petrol car is surprisingly ULEZ compliant for the moment, that is until Khan decides to move the goalposts yet again.

    Saw it, said it, sorted?

"If something doesn't look right, contact staff or text the British Transport Police.... etc etc SSS" Wonder how literally we can take this, couple of weeks ago I saw a very fat bloke in a tight vest and very short shorts on a train. That definitely didn't look right.... :-)

Taking own car to the test- help clarify insurance details

Did my own test in Feb this year in my own car, I was insured with Admiral and they were very reasonable, although I'm quite a bit older than is usual for taking a test, so may not be typical. As others have said, you need to be covered to take the test itself. I had insurance on my provisional...

    Lancaster Gate Station

Has there been a big drop in passenger usage at Lancaster Gate since Crossrail opened? Always thought LG was a bit more important than it looked at first sight, as it was always a good way to get between Paddington mainline station and east/west Central line stations, but wouldn't be surprised...

    Cheddington Station

Not 100% sure but back in 2012-14 when I used the Southern from Clapham Junc to Bletchley rather a lot, I seem to recall it skipped Apsley, Kings Langley and Cheddington. Always used to wonder what Cheddington was for, when passing it looked like it was in the middle of a field with nothing...

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Easier to get a fairly sturdy table knife, stick it under the lid and bend it until the air squeezes out. Should open up without much effort after that. Nah, you want the dog's milk. Lasts longer than any other type of milk, does dog's milk. Why? No bugger'll drink it. 8-) (with apologies to...

Trains on North Devon line delayed and cancelled due disturbance by passengers.

I will second that! A fully respectable establishment which would never permit that sort of thing! ;-) (aw - haven't been there for a few years, must do a trip down soon)

    Favourite Clothing range

I've got 5 Primark plain polo shirts each in a different colour that I bought about 8 years ago, each is worn at least twice a month and thrown in the washing machine after a day. Still got them, and still wear them. A couple are a bit frayed around the edges but I don't care, they're still...

What’s your least favourite station in Hampshire to visit?

Don't normally visit Hampshire, but had cause to stop at Andover recently, nothing wrong with the station itself but there's nothing around it. Given most WoE line trains stop there, I thought I might at least find a greasy spoon nearby to get breakfast, but no dice other than a cuppa from the...

    Charity shops everywhere

Without a high street presence, how is one supposed to donate one's unwanted stuff to said charity shop for sale? Currently nice and easy: 1) chuck stuff in plastic bag 2) take to charity shop of choice on way to work If charity shops become online only: 1) acquire sturdy cardboard box -...
