Sounds somewhat paranoid to me! Maybe First and Arriva are in league to continue the conspiracy against the 701... Anyway, wouldn't a large proportion of northbound passengers at that time of day be returning day-trippers who already have a return or season ticket in their hand? As the...

The end of the Mile and Chain

I was reading it in context as a reply to the post you quoted where somebody was saying they found metric more convenient for real-life use. It seemed like you were recycling that tired old "Imperial's better because sometimes it's easy to divide things into thirds" concept as a direct...

The end of the Mile and Chain

Is it always easier? I've just read an article that talked of something fitting tightly with "only millimetres to spare". Would "only a few 32nds of an inch to spare" work? But anyway, that isn't really an example of using a unit of measurement - it's just using a common unit name as...

    What does WAG stand for?

WAG was the abbreviation for "Welsh Assembly Government" - but it's out of date as that name was superseded during 2011. The executive branch of government in Wales is now known simply as the Welsh Government. The National Assembly for Wales and the Welsh Government are not the same entity...

The end of the Mile and Chain

Oh yes, of course, I do agree and it's good that it's being looked at as a phased thing rather than a "big bang" changeover.

Fair enough. I can't claim to know Arriva's motives or workings better than yourself. On the plus side, if they really are trying to damage the remaining operators I don't think they'll manage it. :) I'm sure the 701 will go from strength-to-strength and Mid Wales Travel look to be developing...

The end of the Mile and Chain

If prices went up it's the fault of unscrupulous traders and a one-off, short-term issue that has long since been outweighed by not having to mess about with 240p in the pound. Once you have made that switchover, the problem is gone forever - unlike the mess and confusion of running two systems...

But while you refer to the 29th September, that change was registered by the middle of August and therefore must have been planned some time before that - that means they set their new timetable at least six weeks before the closure plan was announced. And is the person revising the timetables...

The end of the Mile and Chain

Perhaps the point is that fewer conversions will be necessary in future if distances become metric? If everything else around the railway is designed and built in metric, continued back-converting of distances to miles and chains introduces the same potential for error. Given that chains are...

Well of course people are angry if they're losing their buses. That would be the case whoever the operator was. I still cannot find any official reference to Arriva's Cardiff service being withdrawn rather than retimed and re-routed. However, if that really is the case, why would it preclude...

Now, it seems that local operators like Mid Wales Travel and Coach Travel Wales are very keen to be seen as 'hard done by' and as underdogs and victims of the corporate monster that is Arriva - evident from regular local newspaper articles of the last few years, or the continual carping on one...
