    Derby Resignalling - 22 July - 7 October 2018

possibly a misunderstanding on my part, from early press releases it looked like NR developing for own use but recent reports suggests its more of a land disposal from NR to developers for industrial estate...

    Derby Resignalling - 22 July - 7 October 2018

Are network rail still building a big depot for the own stock on the triangle wasteland south of Derby Station or did that all get axed at some point?

    MML Electrification: progress updates

slightly slow reply, but since this is the electrification thread - Certainly for public networks it's a cost vs safety decision. Overhead lines are significantly cheaper to install. (easier to auger a few poles in than digging a long trench to the required spec & going under/over all the other...

Infrastructure that will never be used again

True that it's extremely unlikely to re-used as a railwayviaduct, but it is now being maintained by a local friends group, the long term plan is to carry out some repairs and use it as a walking/cycling route. Having been up there a fww times on workdays the views are awesome.

    GCR Bridge Project

Is the spoil on adjacent heaps suitable to build a robust embankment which will carry a loco without subsiding during torrential rain? are sheet piles or truck loads of stone required? Being in the bottom of a river valley I imagine it has quite a high proportion of fine sand/clay.

    GCR Bridge Project

I would be interested to see a costing for this. Working to UK health & safety law (CDM, manual handling regs, etc) means the navvies & barrows option for civil engineering on the scale of building a large embankment is a non starter even before we consider paying the navvies a living wage...

    journey planner for energetic transfers?

Thanks fishquin, I had a look at fastjp, but I didn't see any connection time feature, maybe they've changed the UI since you last used it?

    journey planner for energetic transfers?

I suspect many people find the minimum connections times used on nationalrail are a bit overgenerous, especially if you're familar with the larger stations & which platforms serve which routes. NationalRail allows shorter connections times to cross London but not for anywhere else. Do any of...

Yes, a Loughborough Midland GCR high level halt would be awesome.

    GCR Bridge Project

True about the canal offering a similar route, though the steps off the A60 are a bit steep with a bike. The embankment section is quite a wide corridor to accommodate a path, either way getting over the canal is the challenge. Adding the walking/cycle route could unlock additional funds for the...

    GCR Bridge Project

With regards the 1 vs 2 track Lboro central - Precispark discussion. Whilst it is possible to walk or cycle between the two Loughborough stations, it's a convoluted route and not very pleasant following polluted narrow terraced streets. There's no bus route between them and no easy way to get to...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Indeed local and national administrations often make political capital boasting about projects conceived in the previous gov't such is the nature of long term infrastructure planning and short term political cycles.

WCRC banned from running trains on the mainline from 18th Feb 2016 now rescinded

Correct, except 'reasonably practicable' is only one type of statutory duty, the full list are ( I think) Absolute Qualified Practicable Reasonably practicable RP, the lowest, allows the duty holder to argue a control measure would have been unreasonable on grounds of cost. It only...

    Great Central Railway (North Notts)

From your mention of central support you're referring to the MML bridge not the canal bridge? The route immediately south of the MML bridge site is constrained between a waterway/floodplain and a factory & it's carpark. Between the two bridges, there is some Severn Trent infrastructure...

    Network Rail's Linear Scrap Yard

If waste doesn't cause any harm to any ecosystem, is it truly an environmental issue? or just a human aesthetic consideration based on our cultural value systems? An old friend of mine used to trade with indigenous tribes in South America, when they went to big cities they saw litter...

    Network Rail's Linear Scrap Yard

I'm picking up on an environmental agenda with some of the posts in this thread, but I think there's a gap between the general perception of the impact of the problem and its actual impact. Most lineside graffiti and visible railway associated waste (steel, concrete, grinder discs, pandrel...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

That the honours are still connected in name to the "British Empire" is so archaic. Association with the "British Empire" doesn't seem like an honour to me, when you consider our role in the opium wars, mau mau uprising, Ghandi era uprisings, Diego Garcia inhabitants, etc,

    Great Central Railway (North Notts)

As it happens.. I spotted a construction compound started in the triangle of land between the GCR, MML and A60 today (behind the brush works). It appears work has commenced on the GCR overbridge. www.loughboroughecho.net/news/local-news/ceremony-mark-start-work-gcr-10864250 I suspect...
