    Landslip in Sonning Cutting

Just been through on a train, passed slowly on the relief lines. Lots of technicians in attendance with a rail-mounted machine of some kind. One tree looking a bit precarious hanging over the overhead lines (but not touching it), although it could have been my eyes deceiving me. The pile of logs...

First West of England (Bristol, Bath & The West)

First have submitted a planning application to electrify Hengrove depot, providing charging space for 130 buses.

Eurostar lifts 'cap' on passengers at St Pancras

I have had mine counted recently, and got held up because on one occasion I had an "entering France" stamp with no corresponding "leaving France" stamp (probably a lack of ink on the stamp at the time...)

Rights when rebooking disrupted London - Paris - Milan return journey in October

I was caught up in this on Trenitalia. There has been a lot of discussion about it on Twitter, but no one has been able to get anything more than a refund - neither SNCF nor Trenitalia are rebooking on alternative routes. We ended up shelling out a lot of money for the alternative via Zurich...

    Bristol airport bus services

It also used to stop right at the airport door but now it is relegated to the sorry excuse for a coach station down the hill. You can only catch a bus right outside the airport if you are heading to one of the car parks...

Transport for Wales Class 231 / 756 FLIRTs

Passengers were similarly confused about the door opening delay when the 745/755s were introduced in East Anglia. As the trains became more common people rapidly got used to it. Same goes for the steps up to some seats. People generally use public transport in "autopilot" mode so anything...

Toulouse Airport Tram to Matabiau Gare Metro Ticket

I visit Toulouse often and know the system. The bus is direct but subject to traffic delays. The tram + metro option is very reliable, and the change at Arènes is not long. You can use the single ticket for both journeys. It has to be validated onboard the tram and then again when you enter the...

    Class 700 getting ends wrong

I noticed the same yesterday from Gatwick to Farringdon. I was in the very front coach, and the display said I was in coach 12, closest to the "back" indication on the right hand side of the display.

Western Rail Link - any updates?

Looking at a typical evening itinerary, next week around 4pm, Bristol Temple Meads to Heathrow T5: Via Elizabeth line: 2h10min, £44.30 Via Railair: 2h16min, £51.20 Plus I've had variable experience with Railair journey times in peak time traffic. I'd trust the rail connections to be more...

Western Rail Link - any updates?

I travelled from Bristol Temple Meads to Heathrow T5 and back this week, and the journey that was both quickest and cheapest was changing at Reading and then Hayes & Harlington. The changes were short and reliable in both directions.

Electric vehicle has ruined my day

Car Club cars are primarily intended for nipping about the local area, hence they tend to be small hatchbacks (whether fossil fuel or EV) and range is unlikely to be a big issue. The cars live in specific parking spaces around the town/city, and presumably the EV ones have chargers. For a...

Bristol Temple Meads to Glasgow - Actually need to return to Ely

Thanks all, it looks like Leicester is the best bet. I can find quite a reasonable itinerary, which might even be beatable with some quick connections. Also, the journey back via Leicester (& Birmingham New Street) is barely any longer than via London on the Sunday, so I'm happy with that.

Bristol Temple Meads to Glasgow - Actually need to return to Ely

Hi all, I have a First Anytime Return from Bristol to Glasgow next Wednesday (company paid ticket). For personal reasons I actually need to travel to Ely on the return leg (Thursday). How close can I get on my existing ticket and what would I need to buy on top? To complicate matters I then...

Modern cabs - do they overload the driver with information?

Airbus aircraft have a "dark cockpit" philosophy for all physical switches and indicators. This means that if everything is OK, it should not be illuminated. This can be counter-intuitive if you are not trained to operate it, as certain things are the opposite way round to normal. For example, a...

    Real-time information on the train

I agree the system on the 755s is very good. My only criticism is that it scrolls through the screens too quickly, so it can be difficult to digest the information, even for someone who knows what they're looking for.

Braking issue on Caledonian Sleeper causes train to "run away" at Edinburgh

An undetectable single failure which could lead to a catastrophic condition would be an absolute no go in aviation. See certification requirement CS-25.1309(b)(1) https://www.easa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/dfu/CS-25_Amdt%203_19.09.07_Consolidated%20version.pdf

    Disused lines with cycle paths

Outside of your specified zone, but the Bristol to Bath Railway Path is the busiest off-road cycle route in the UK. Part of the railway route is still open as the heritage Avon Valley Railway.

The new gas buses are remarkably quiet. Makes a big difference when they go past my house compared with the Geminis they have replaced.

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

I am an engineer working in aviation. Aircraft systems very regularly need to be rebooted, including on aircraft we all fly on all the time. The important thing is that systems fail in a safe manner, and it is exactly the same for trains. Typically if a system needs a reboot it is because its...
