5Z37, 06 43 LSL empty stock Crewe HS-Tom na Faire depot today.

Dumb question time. Why is this being top and tailed when there's a DBSO? Is it not in working order? Or no suitable locos available?

Non standard track gauges that were and currently used in the UK

Also the connected Northern and Eastern. The nearby London and Blackwall was 5' 1/2" but changed to the standard when the extension to the ECR via Bow Road was built

    Operators' per-km finances

Presumably it's not just train staff in the figures but all staff. 1704279656 Looking at my local line, c2c, I'm puzzled as to how it incurs a diesel cost. I'm also surprised the lease costs for its 357s are not lower.

Bridge Damage - Merseyrail - Ormskirk line

Looks like another case of a long section of parapet being pulled down by the handrail. Ooops. Swt_passenger beat me to it

There's also the long gone Eye station in Suffolk.

Trivia: Quay side/ Harbour stations/ terminuses

Around my way we have Tollesbury Pier, already mentioned, Blackwall and Thames Haven. Maldon East was planned to be on a quayside but the quay was never built.

Trivia - how many stations have a road bisecting their platforms and hence a level crossing within the station

Stanford-le-Hope had a wheeled platform section from 1881 to 1918. A platform extension could only go over the level crossing so a mobile wooden platform section was introduced. The 1918 station rebuild moved everything to the other side of the crossing. I can't find any pics online but there...

    Unusual locos hauling failed HSTs?

Take a look at the opening 20 seconds of this Class 40 documentary. In the background there's a 37 pulling an HST

    Noisy tractor (Class 37)

Just sitting quietly at home in Basildon when the unmistakable noise of a 37 comes through the closed windows. From about half a mile away. Always makes me smile. Quite a big night out for it: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:H10311/2023-07-18/detailed

    East-facing bay at Pitsea station

Pic 65 in Middleton's Barking to Pitsea shows that the siding was wired in 1986. I don't know when it was unwired.

How many trains that can run faster than its current top speed?

The 357s were built for 100 mph, and could probably exceed that, but spend their life limited to 75. It's a shame no one's ever hired a pair for a railtour up the GEML to stretch their legs.

Is Fenchurch Street the only London Terminus that has never had any regular diesel hauled trains or DMUs?

David Brennand's book London's East End Diesels has a pic of a pic of a 3 car Class 125 heading west from Barking en route to Fen St in 1968. Volume 7 of Peter Kay's history of the LTS mentions that in 1958 DMUs were used for Pitsea-Tilbury- Barking services. The only mention of them reaching...

Made in 1957. 57 units, with 57ft coaches. Heinz would have been proud

Varamis Rail Given Operators Licence from ORR

Varamis were rather vexed the other day: Service 018 ~ 01/02/23 Unfortunately, 1M04 & 1S04 were caped last night due to another train operator’s failure to observe our place in the WTT at #Birmingham, stabling a train in the only platform we can utilise, therefore denying us access to it...

    Wigan - Liverpool Blocked

The loco couldn't get the train moving on dry rails the next day? Isn't it expected to be able to do this? Isn't the train weight governed around the ability of the loco to do this on the route's limiting gradient?

Mitchells & Butlers Cape Hill Brewery Van Liveries - Real or "Photoshopped"?

The only 2 photos I could find of M&B wagons were the 2 you posted originally. English Breweries In Old Photographs (by Ian P. Peaty) has the apparently touched up picture by the warehouse on page 114, while the picture with John Barleycorn in the rail avenue appears on page 63 of Brewery...
