Which lines/stock do the lights still go on and off when going over points

Today, Yes, and for home use, Yes. However, bear in mind the time when the S-Stock was first specced out. I can tell you that in THOSE days, a decent LED lighting that behaved as a strip and was easy to replace/maintain/provide good light just might have not been available (I know as I myself...

Which lines/stock do the lights still go on and off when going over points

Whilst having LED lighting is often desirable, its often a compromise. Remember traditional FL Tubes are still a lot more efficient than incandesent lights, with modern FL tubes and driving equipment reaching 80 to 100 lumens per watt (compared to 16 for incandesent, and 100 to 130 for LED white...

Driver forgot to turn lights on?

I have always wondered why "checklists" are not used on Railways and other safety critical processes, such as those used on commercial aeroplanes (pre start/startup/etc). These checklists dont have to be complex, but just a step of things to do when starting a train for passenger use (and...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

Thanks for that. I was afraid this was the case when they did the conversion. Its a bit of a shame in a way as that COULD have improved their usage. I am fully aware that even in the 458/0 guise they were less "ready" than the 450s to convert to AC (requireing the addition/changing of many...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Many videos (taken front front on) visibly show it's acceleration from a standstill just from the way you can see the front cab rise a little as it starts moving, similar to some fast accellerating cars, something I have not seen on many other, especially DC trains (barring the Pacer, though...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

Out of curiosity, how difficult/worthwhile would it be to add AC overhead equipment to the 458s that were originally 458/0? I know those had and still have the pantograph wells, and are similar to the ScotRail Junipers which are already AC. I am fully aware the ex GatEx 460s did not have...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

Being a museum and not a real station, people (especially children) may not be in a mindset of safty and minding the trains so actually a fence is required.

Class 80x driving question (possibly others too)

The question I was trying to imply is does the limiter on 80x also control the brakes as well as the traction, so will limit even when going downhill? In cars you have standard (no braking) and active (controls braking) so you could hold the accelerator and it will not exceed a limit regardless...

Class 80x driving question (possibly others too)

I don't know the answer to this, but taking cars as an example (those which have selectable speed limiters) this can be risky if the brakes are not also controlled. My wife's astra does not, so whilst the engine may stop applying any power after hitting the set speed, if you are going downhill...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

I agree the refurb was done to a high standard (especially considering the state they were in prior to the refurb), however, that was a) a long time ago and things have gotten worn, and b) they have become extremely tatty and worn in recent month, quite possibly due to limited remedial work as...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Was ABDO planned for all stations operated by 701s, or just some? I would have thought it may be risky to only implement it in some as the potential of assuming it is available, when it's not and vice versa could cause problems? Rare as it may be, mistakes have been made in the past. I don't...

The illusion of width: maximising carriage space in the British loading gauge

Length of each carraige is a factor too. If the carraige is longer, it has to be a little narrower to fit the same LG around corners. Articulated carraiges, with shorter segments potentially allow a greater width (such as the new tube trains, and trams)

HS2 Construction Updates -Brackley to Great Missenden / Chilterns North Portal

Quick Answer.. Almost... The original GC formation would have been a bit bendy just at the calvert junction, so it deviates very slightly up until around Finmare where the old bridges have already been replaced with new bridges for the HS2 formation.and again it loosely follows the formation a...

    Some historical class 175 queries

seems like overheating also effected the 458/460 (also an Alstom Coradia Juniper, like the 175/180/334) where the cooling fans for the traction motors were driven by, or in sync with the motor speed, and whilst fine on infrequent stopping fast running, as slower speeds with frequent stops the...

What is the difference between the class 350 subclasses?

Sorry to be pedantic, but they were ordered for SWT and that may have been a policy at the time for more longer distance trains such as the 442 and some slam doors. I noticed in latter days there were not used as often (especially on metro and frequent stop routes) and indeed were removed from...

Last 2 in passenger service SWR 707's

Do the 707s use the same "slower" Pneumatic door openings like the 450/350/360s? I remember chatting to the Guard on a train to Feltham, and he said he preffered the 458s for that reason as they had much quicker (electric?) mechanisms. Still, I never felt they were much slower than the 458s, and...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

To be fair, that makes a lot of sense, I remember raising my eyebrows when it was first speculated at up to 125 in the original proposal, as there is not much scope for 125mph on that line except in certain areas, and felt that 100mph was more suitable. Nevertheless, to answer the earlier...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

If I remember right, way back when this re-opening was proposed the idea was for a 100 - 125mph capable line (also electrified) and according to proposal videos, served by what looks clearly like intercity trains. Not sure what the final line speeds will be, but I assume nothing will stop a 800...

    Best looking Rolling Stock Liveries?

I think there were very few liveries that worked with all stock. Swallow was great on the angular 225 and HST but not so great on some locos, and would have looked aweful on 390s, or 80X. Southern looked great on the Elecro and Turbo stars but didnt look great on either the 455/456. Strangly it...

Which type of train still in service today will you miss most when they've all been withdrawn from use on the national network?

I know this is a late reply, and not sure if anyone picked up on this, but the "single" coach of the 455/7 is a PEP, whilst the 318, is a Mark 3 derived train that shares more commonailty with the 317, and the rest of the 455 formation.
