Is green electricity subsidising rail freight?

I believe there's already a large backlog for the installation electric chargers at service stations, for cars, because the national grid is unable to provide the required power. Equally, I gather there's a large backlog for connectiions to the national grid for wind and solar farms because the...

Is green electricity subsidising rail freight?

Electric trucks are only ever going to cover local deliveries of stuff which would never have been carried on rail anyway. We've already seen freight companies suspending the use of electric locomotives bcause the the power cost was too high.

    Rail Reform Bill published

Data from Personal Incomes Statistics Tax year 2018 to 2019 I'm sure the proportion of taxpayers with total incomes over £50,000 is somewhat larger nowadays. Fiscal drag and salary inflation work wonders. Assuming the polls on voting intentions are correct we should soon have an opportunity...

Southern Warning of Weather-Related Service Disruption

As mentioned above, the bit in bold is likely to lead people into just discounting such warnings precisely because they seem to happen with monotonous regularity. I'm sure HMT is paying close attention and may well be more inclined to reduce funds to the railway due to the perceived unreliabilty...

HS2: Why do we need it?

It's also worth remembering that Cameron opposed the third runway for Heathrow in the lead up to the election as he claimed HS2 would dramatically reduce domestic air travel due to its speed. That was probably another reason why speed was emphasised including of course its name of High Speed 2...

    'SG' - Regulation Question

Bog standard punter here. On the basis of the information provided I make the following assumptions: Each service requires a TRTS before it can depart. There is no instruction giving one service priority over the other. Neither road has a greater impact on operations than the other...

Michelle Handforth, Network Rail Regional Managing Director resigns

I believe up above it was mentioned that she had been commercial director at one of the TOCs so she had previous exposure to the railway. It also depends what those advertising the job envisaged as the requirements. Since she got the job I imagine that operations experience wasn't a requirement.

ORR calls for more competition in station catering

£700m revenue is all fine and well but it's not the same as profit. Stations may "only" get £100m in rental fees but how much work do they have to do for it? Is the electricity and heating included in the rental fees or does the shop have to cover it out of their £700m revenue in addition to...

India - Crash between two passenger trains (30/10)

At least 13 people died and about 50 are injured after two passenger trains collided in India's Andhra Pradesh state on Sunday. It appears a stopped passenger train was hit from behind by another passenger train. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-67234331

    Thameslink Core pantograph strike

Why am I not surprised? Maybe if it had an affect on their income?

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

If the train had been cautioned then at what speed would it have been running? Presumably this slower speed would have enabled it to stop before the landslide or would it have just meant the impact of the collision was less?

Disruption between Carlisle and Lockerbie - Attempted robbery of Mail train (01/08/2023)

I'm sure that we would all prefer that but it's not as easy as waving a wand plus it also requires resources that are in scarce supply however this is going offtopic.

Proposed Power Line Will Spoil Views on Heart of Wales Railway.

Once they ramp up the land based wind farms then the power line will be the least of your worries.

Mile-long US freight trains face ban after baby death

I noticed this article today from which the title comes. Fair use excerpt: Is this just another case of a paper hyping it up or is it a realistic prospect?

    Change of train mid-route?

I suppose the obvious question has to be why are so many GUs failing so frequently? The IETs have been in service more than long enough for teething problems to have been addressed.

So who are these 'faceless' decision makers at the DfT and why are they not held accountable to the public?

Oh give over! It's a notionally right wing government with large dollops of LibDem/Labour philosophy. You only have to look at the HMT/Gove's attacks on the rented sector to see that.

    UK Rail Passenger Numbers Discussion

Sigh. The taxpayer is not the government. The taxpayer funds the government either through direct taxes such as income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax etc. or through indirect taxes such as VAT, fuel duty etc. The government also borrows money but has to pay it back at some stage using...
