    Carillion in Liquidation

I for one am very sad to see this . I drove OTM for Carillion for a number of years and in my experience they were an excellent t company to work for. It was , and to some extent remains, a sad day for me when TUPEd elsewhere .

    Night shift fatigue (RAIB report)

Thirty minutes of the Depot ? Ok . Plus sufficient time to get in not to be late plus get up time plus swapping earlies to late . It does have a bearing obviously but few companies allow your application if you live over an hour away in any case and I've seen them make people move house when...

    Night shift fatigue (RAIB report)

Never been docked pay. I've never taken the mick and only done it genuinely, usually on where we had a week of nights , Sunday "off" ha de ha, and then in at 0400 Monday for 90 stop worse turn in link. Night rate ? On my 5th toc and foc and never heard of night rate !

    Night shift fatigue (RAIB report)

Night rate ? Where's that come from ? Can I have it ? Never had it in 20 years . This is the elephant in the cupboard in very sleepy pyjamas . As said I am one of the very few where I drive with the gumption to phone in and say : " I'm ferked , I'm not coming in " I know it makes me as popular...

    Night shift fatigue (RAIB report)

It's a killer. And getting worse. I can feel it altering my DNA these days . It's become impossible to share a bed . You can finish early hours Sunday and then be in at Dawns crack on Monday . I have no hesitation whatsoever in calling in on turns like this and saying : I'm too tired . I won't...

There are many managers on the railway who have never worked in a role other than being a manager

    What should I expect?

A nice honeymoon period before the grim reality kicks in around 2 years time ! Good luck with it but don't imagine it's narnia

You miss my point entirely . How as a passenger do you , or any other passenger , sitting in a coach , on phone or reading paper , know how many buttock clenching PTI moments a DOO driver has had ? About as many as I realise the aircrew of any plane I fly on has, unless there is a Big Crunch and...

" Ignorance is bliss " would be my comment on this post, ( and by God there's some ignorance on this thread ) have you ever driven said train ? No ? then you have no idea of how many times the driver has sucked up the seat cushion with his sphincter do you ? Safe enough now / There is an ex...

Is being a train driver all it's cracked up to be?

And therein is the rub, many posters in this thread are pretty new to it, or about to do it, when it's gone downhill as much as it will over the next 20 years as it has over the last 20 years, we'll discuss it again in 2036. It's not the worst job in the world, but don't pretend it's ANYWHERE...

Is being a train driver all it's cracked up to be?

Spare ? the 3 times I was spare this year, I had more trains to drive than one the normally rammed diagrams

Is being a train driver all it's cracked up to be?

You're DUE to be a train driver ? If that's the case, come back in 3 years and tell us how wonderful it is then !

Some guidance, before I waste my own (and other people's) time.

You forgot to add : And feel the power of the 142 brakes as they grip the rails at your 90th station stop of the day, with another 6 days in work to go for another 450 stops, at the same stations !

If the driver doesn't get out, or as one day - and be honest you can see it coming - due to security, he can't err, you don't mate, sorry and all that, I'd love to help but can't. Tough, bye Nice eh ? Think that would make me feel good ?

Some guidance, before I waste my own (and other people's) time.

This is sound advice, do not think this is a bed of roses, you can kiss your social life, use of mobile phone, a drink and any hobby goodbye too. If you are only going into being a driver for the money, then you will begin to feel the same as you do now, very, very quickly. I consider myself...

Southern DOO: ASLEF members vote 79.1% for revised deal

That is the thing, in this age of absolution of responsibility, and where every action is analised in minute detail, possibly all the way to court, by people in offices, in daylight, when they are well rested, with a fresh coffee and a rule book open in front of them, you need to have trained...

You misconstrued me, or I explained poorly, I am a driver, and I think removing the guard to introduce more DOO or some "OBS" in a lesser role is retrogressive --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Apology accepted, but not sought or required, I bear no harsh feelings or trauma about...

Southern DOO: ASLEF members vote 79.1% for revised deal

I don't mind personal attacks, such as being called an angry little man with no intellect and no prospects off the railways due to my lack of skill set. The DOO spectre isn't going to go away, and it is a great shame, because it's not good for the industry, or it's paying passengers, and it's...

I must confess, I had to google that one ! I am quite happy to admit I don't know everything about everything, especially in regards to things I have never done --- old post above --- --- new post below --- This is one of the major points, whoever you have as the 2nd person on a train HAS to...
