Isle of Man Steam Packet Co

The Pier Head landing stage does appear to be available still. From what I can observe, the new terminal at Liverpool seems to be largely complete, but no obvious sign of any imminent change to the berth location.

Trivia: Bus routes that cannot use double decker vehicles

Route 487 on the Wirral (Liverpool to Neston), has a low bridge in the Neston area.

Trivia: Largest City/Town Without Buses on New Year’s Day?

No buses operating on the Wirral today, which leaves Birkenhead unserved. There are limited services on the Liverpool side of the river though.

    BREL stock abroad

New Zealand operate some converted Mk2 coaches from BR days, though they are barely recognisable as such.

    Xmas (Winter Festival) timetables 2023

There aren't any Stagecoach buses on New Years Day on the Wirral either this year. Result is no bus services whatsoever on NYD in the Wirral.

Stagecoach Merseyside Cheshire and South Lancashire

My experience of buses around Liverpool on New Years Day is that they are generally not too busy.

Stagecoach Merseyside Cheshire and South Lancashire

This refers to New Year's Day 2024 - i.e. next year. Yep - my bad! Just to add that there are very few services running on the Liverpool side on that day too.

Stagecoach Merseyside Cheshire and South Lancashire

I note that Stagecoach aren't operating any services on the Wirral on New Years' Day (NYD) this year (neither are Arriva). A fairly limited service has operated over the last few years on NYD, for example, an hourly service on route 1, Chester - Liverpool. I can see me having to break the bad...

    Rail Rovers/Rangers

A Merseytravel Saveaway doesn’t quite get to Wigan, (boundary is Garswood), but is the only other day ticket I can think of.

27th January - Plan B easing - observations and usage

Not rail related, but my office has today, removed signs asking people to wear masks around the building. They’ve also increased lift capacity from 3 to 15 (the nominal capacity for each lift), and have relaxed the requirement for only two people to be sat on a bank of four desks.

Can 230s on Borderlands Line now go further than Bidston and my idea for Liverpool-bound extension

The service was cut back from Birkenhead North to Bidston to save a diagram. Up to 1978, the service was 3 diagrams but subsequently dropped to 2 diagrams. The unfortunate consequence has been the very tight turnaround at each end.

Nantwich and the Crewe to Chester line

Beeston & Tarporley station has been looked at on more than one occasion over the last 20 or so years, but it doesn't really stack up. Although Tarporley has grown, it's still a fair way from the line. There's hardly any other public transport in the area, (aside from the Arriva 84 Chester -...

    Which tramways have you used?

The ones not on the list that I've travelled on include; Kusttram, Paris, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Clermont Ferrand (if that counts as it's a pneumatic tyre based system with a single guide rail), Antwerp, Zurich, Bern, Basle, Milan, Vienna, Graz, Budapest, Krakow, Bratislava, and Melbourne.

    Odd historical Sunday closures

At least it was roughly hourly back then. In the late 70's & early 80's, the Sunday service between Chester & Rock Ferry was further reduced to a train roughly every 90 minutes. That, with most of the intermediate stations still closed, allowed for one unit to cover the service.

    Chester station platforms poor condition

That’s how I remember the entrance to Chester station in the 70’s. Two gates at the neck of the short passageway. Originally, the travel centre was on the left as you entered, the ticket office on the right.

Liverpool South Parkway - Chester fares

By way of an update, I purchased an Off Peak Day Return, Liverpool-Crewe (any permitted) for £12.60. Break of journey at Chester on the return leg & initially told by the barrier that the ticket wasn’t valid. Was let through when a colleague intervened to say they had “no problem” with them.

Liverpool South Parkway - Chester fares

As the OP, I'll add some context. Nowadays, I live in Birkenhead, though I lived in Chester for 47 years previously. There's a beer festival at the Rail Heritage Centre (today as it happens), and I'm meeting some friends to travel down there. The plan is to go there, then return via Chester as...

Liverpool South Parkway - Chester fares

For the record, my plan was to travel from Green Lane to Crewe, travelling out via Runcorn & back via Chester. I figured that a Saveaway would cover the outward Green Lane-Liverpool South Parkway & Chester-Green Lane legs, the single covering the other leg. It would undercut the walk up day...

Liverpool South Parkway - Chester fares

Thanks all. I’ve re-checked on the London Northwestern website, and that £7.80 fare is routed through Birkenhead. You have to drill down to see the station changes though, as it’s far from clear on the mixing desk.

Liverpool South Parkway - Chester fares

Thanks - but there are no fares that are "Route Crewe". There are three routings which are, Birkenhead, Warrington & Runcorn. Both the £7.80 single and £6.10 single fares are both routed via Runcorn. Also, would Crewe not have been a permitted route prior to re-opening the Halton Chord, as...
