Highest temp train air con can cope with

The 195s and 331s seemed to have their A/C set a couple of years ago to only allow cooling down to 7°C lower than detected outside temperature, so that's not so great for temperatures over 35°C. Although hopefully the fact the A/C should reduce the humidity as well as temperature would still...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

769s and 390s can't obey MU speeds. Apologies if you are already aware of this.

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

769 movements are now to run in diesel mode throughout and must not be used in AC mode until further notice apparently.

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

Blackpool/Hazel Groves can be worked by any of: Manchester Victoria drivers (partially or throughout. Only two links sign Oxford Rd - Hazel Grove, but all links sign Oxford Rd - Blackpool North), Buxton drivers (partially or throughout), Piccadilly drivers (Oxford Rd to Hazel Grove, possibly...

    Heaton Derailment 22/03/22

Not the first such spad on Heaton with similar results. There was one about 15 years ago.

Glasgow - 75mph PSR after Eglinton St Jn

Not necessarily, it's not had a TSR for at least 8 years and I'm fairly sure even before then, there was a long-standing TSR through Holme tunnel and the whole route via Copy Pit seems to develop a new bump or dip every time there's a monsoon or drought but no TSR. The line speed is different...

Glasgow - 75mph PSR after Eglinton St Jn

Summit Tunnel on the L&Y is similar, but there's a reduction in permissible speed which is signed at the entrance to the tunnel in the down direction. The actual reduction commences much further in advance, about 7/8 the way through the tunnel, at 16m 40ch which is about 24ch on approach to the...

Trivia: Electrification that's (likely) never been used.

As far as I know the FNW Piccadilly - New St / International service with 309s was two return trips per day and lasted until the early 2000s, although I think possibly by the time the service was panned it was run using 175s. There were also the FNW Manchester Airport-Euston services formed of...

Trivia: Electrification that's (likely) never been used.

Weren't CT still using 323s on New St - Lime St stoppers then?

Trivia: Electrification that's (likely) never been used.

Platform 5 Oxford Rd has been used, I've taken 331s out of there.

    Wacky formations

I'm making an assumption here that train wire 4 is a loop around the train capable of being energised by any one of the start batteries on the train - we were told that TW4 was the electrical equivalent of the brake pipe on an air-braked train but I rather think that's too simple a comparison

    Wacky formations

I do remember on a depot isolating the start battery on the end vehicle on two units coupled together years ago with a trainee to try to prove that the train could still be moved because the feed for TW4 would simply be found from elsewhere in the train. I don't think there is necessarily away...

    Wacky formations

Fairly correct, as I understand it the brake control circuits (supplied by train wire 4) are supplied by the start battery on the rearmost vehicle, unless that start battery is unavailable - in which case the supply is taken from the start battery on the vehicle within the train consist which...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

No I was judging it by actual acceleration 'feel' as the notice says we should. In fact when you put a 769 in diesel mode from notch 3 into 4 there seems to be a tiny pause/power drop off as you go into 4. This doesn't happen in AC mode, and if I'm not mistaken there was no field weakening on...

    Totley Tunnel issues

Not a chance for Northern. Only one link of Northern drivers at one depot, nominally 48 drivers but in reality far fewer, now sign the route through Standedge tunnel.

Delays experienced between Bolton & Wigan 12/02/22

Stop immediately, contact the controlling signaller, report the situation, fill in an RT3185 report form. A black signal is to be treated as though it is displaying its most restrictive aspect. Lamp proving and other interlocking means it's unlikely a driver will just happen across an unlit...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

Interesting replies, thanks. It's worth noting that there was another company instruction posted warning us not to open up power controllers on 769/319 units too quickly (but failing to furnish us with what are deemed to be acceptable speeds for each power setting) due to traction motor damage...

Yes, at least twice within a few days there was a loss of signalling.

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

The engine revs on 769s are very odd, you take power in say notch 2 and revs rise but then they increase markedly again at a few mph despite not touching the power controller again. When you then open up to notch 3 there is another slight increase in engine revs but increasing from notch 3-4...
