So many announcements, so few people taking them on board

Was at Frodsham station this afternoon and my train to Manchester was delayed. The announcement for this delay (13 minutes) was played every 60 seconds from 3 minutes before the train's schedule arrival until it actually arrived. This was despite the length of the delay never changing. Surely...

Your Operator of the Year 2023

Of the operators I've used for more than one round trip this year, which are Avanti West Coast, Crossrail, Merseyrail, Northern and Transport for Wales, I would say: Best: Transport for Wales. Despite being the operator I travel with most, I've not experienced a single cancellation and only...

Elizabeth Line now has most cancellations

Used Crossrail on two separate days recently travelling to/from Heathrow T4. First time was fine. Second would have been a nightmare had I been trying to catch a flight rather than going to a hotel as there was a 35 minute gap in the service to T4. Cancellations may not be an issue for those...

    WCML signalling

AFAIK there is no underpass for horses (or anything else) at Norton Crossing which appears to be quite well used by locals. What will happen to its usage levels when all he proposed housing is built remains to be seen. I believe the road from Murdishaw to the crossing is to be retained as some...

Are Trans Pennine Express reliable ?

in my experience they've been very 'reliable' recently. Two times in the last month I've saved at least half an hour by catching a late running Trans Pennine Express and not having to wait for a Northern local

Deliberate msinformation on departure boards at Euston?

Saw the new screens at London Euston for the first time yesterday and imo, they are a vast improvement on the previous set up. Clear, well presented information with intuitive colors. Also, very easy to identify who operates the train. On the main listings, the operator is clearly stated at...

Odd sign regarding dispatch at Wolverhampton

IIRC Nuneaton is self-dispatch only if no staff present for LNWR. The platforms LNWR use are islands - Avanti normally use the fast side and LNWR the slow side. It's therefore possible for staff to be on the platform but not immediately visible to guards of arriving trains.

    Manchester Piccadilly P13 & 14 new platforms

Would be helpful if all trains could stop at Deansgate to maintain connections with Metrolink trams. Made getting from Warrington to Rochdale a real pain today. To rub sslt into the wound, the train from Warrington was (as usual) signal checked at Deansgate

Destination blinds, same entry appearing multiple times

IIRC Sprinter DMUs had alphabetical order roller blinds with each station listed only once and 'Not in Public Use' being roughly in the middle. ISTR winding through one at Tyseley depot open day and being surprised at how comprehensive the blind was (all three Birmingham were included...

    Smethwick Rolfe Street

Passed through Rolfe Street station a couple of times recently and noticed that the land on both sides is being cleared. Does anyone know whether the station is being redeveloped? I've tried searching the internet as well as the forum and bot found anything.

Level crossing, barriers up but wig-wag lights still going.

In my experience, wigwags tend to extinguish before the barriers are fully raised, although the steady red lights on top of the barriers remain lit until the barriers are fully ib the raised (vertical) position. Examples include: Herlescott, Wem, Leaton, Baschurch, Lower Radway Green, Alsager...

Unions promise to fight bid to make rail staff work weekends

Okay, I'm going to bite. First of all, as others have mentioned THE UNIPNS WANT SUNDAYS INSIDE THE WORKING WEEK TOCS DON'T!!!!!!! When I first joined the railway, c.20 years ago, I worked for LT and Sundays were inside the working week. IIRC the working pattern was two weeks earlies followed...

Hundreds of railway ticket offices could be closed

Agreed. E-tickets are a pita when it comes to barriers as they don't scan properly un less held at precisely the right angle for precisely the right time

Hundreds of railway ticket offices could be closed

Regarding priv tickets not being available from TVMs due to potential fraudulent use, might the following be a solution? 1) All railcards, including priv, issued as a smartcard 2) TVMs to have one button for railcard discounts which is touched by any passenger holding a valid railcard 3)...

Longest wait from amber light at level crossing to train? Why does it seem to take so long?

That reminds me of Leaton LC on the Shrewsbury/Chester line before it was converted to AHB and had traditional wooden gates. From memory, the signaller would close the gates around 5 minutes before a train arrived and not re-open them until it had passed the first signal after the crossing...

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

Anyone else used Metrolink recently? Despite face masks no longer being required and social distancing dropped, most trams are still playing full length covid announcements on the approach to every stop. Totally unnecessary imho and likely to cause passengers to tune out of other, important...

Disruption to services - Storm Dudley & Storm Eunice

Just viewed that infamous forecast on youtube. The full version (2 mins34 seconds) can be found by typing michael fish forecast 1987 into either Bing or Google. In it he reassures viewers that there isn't going to be a hurricane, which was technically correct as the sustained wind speeds...

Disruption to services - Storm Dudley & Storm Eunice

Here in North Cheshire, it was surprisingly calm and sunny this morning. However, it's got cloudier and rainier during the past 2 hours and the wind is starting to pick up significantly as I type this

    longitudinal bench seats.

IMHO another problem with trains having all longitudinal seats is that sideways seems to be the worst direction to travel after having a few drinks. I remember that when I lived in West London and socializes in the West End I would quite often travel home (facing forwards)via Ealing Broadway...

Trivia: Stations scheduled to have all platforms occupied at once

Wolverhampton regularly has all four through platforms (1-4) occupied plus bay platform 5 Redditch often has all platforms occupied (I'll get my coat)
