    The infamous 1A63 0729 Brighton - Victoria....

And today, thanks to an engineering problem, it appears it didn't run at all from Brighton, departing from Gatwick instead.

    Network Rail Helicopters

Yes, I see them too because there is a pylon route between us and the railway.

    Network Rail Helicopters

Many thanks for that. Just what I was looking for and couched in the sort of gentle language that meant that I could understand most of what they were talking about.

    Network Rail Helicopters

I know little or nothing about the running of the railway, but I do have curiosity about it. I am very close to the Brighton Line and at fairly regular intervals see Network Rail flying a helicopter along the line, a few hundred feet up, presumably inspecting the line in some way. I am...

    Question from a language translator.

Thanks folks. I have not had any further context information, but he has come back to me and said that "wrong direction movement" sounds fine to him and that he has now come across the term somewhere else which seems to confirm it. He is quite remarkable in the things he manages to cope with...

    Question from a language translator.

Thankfully, he doesn't have to! He translates the other way. The original French word was "Contresens" which literally means something like contradirection, but contraflow didn't work because it only (we think) refers to roads.

    Question from a language translator.

I have been asked the following by my translator friend in France I assume that this might happen when a line is under maintenance and part of it is closed. Suggestions please?

    Carriage/Coach?

A translator friend of mine has asked me if I know the difference in railway terms between "Carriage" and "Coach". Is there a subtle difference between the use of the two words, or are they interchangeable? Also, he asked me for my opinion on a term for the door between carriages and parts...

The Royal Wessex - 5/7/14 delay

Yes, the timings on Real Time Trains showed it as spot on time as far as the arrival at Preston Park, but then about 30 minutes late leaving there. It was definitely 30 minutes late arriving at Three Bridges as I just about saw it (and just about filmed it!)

The Royal Wessex - 5/7/14 delay

Yesterday, The Royal Wessex (Three Bridges to Weymouth and back) ran almost bang on time all the way there and all the way back as far as Preston Park (near Brighton). It then stayed there about 30 minutes longer than scheduled, getting into Three Bridges at 2200 instead of 2130. Out of...

Tinsley Green station near Gatwick Airport

Thanks once again folks. As you can tell, I am much of a novice at the subject but am interested to learn a bit in my old age. Yes, I know about Tinsley Green as a place as I have lived within 2 miles of it for nearly 50 years, and knew a little of the history of the station, but as to the...

Tinsley Green station near Gatwick Airport

Thanks folks, that is all very interesting and clears up my puzzlement. I notice, Fahad, that RTT show numerous trains being timed at Tinsley Green, today's list is here and looks rather like every train up and down the line. I had wondered if the appearance of the name might have had...

Tinsley Green station near Gatwick Airport

Yesterday, I was tracking a late-running train between Three Bridges and East Croydon using Real Time Trains and I was surprised to notice that it was shown as passing through Tinsley Green station just south of Gatwick. I was surprised because Tinsley Green, as a named station, only existed...
