    ASLEF strikes 5th-8th April weekend

The railway is 7 days a week, often 24 hours a day or near. Tain drivers regular salary should reflect that as normal, none of this Sunday working 'optional', for example, and enough drivers recruited to man services properly. £600 from Avanti just to be able to run a 'normal' service? Ridiculous.

    ASLEF strikes 5th-8th April weekend

Meanwhile, the public just work around any strike action, it's almost normal now, with zero sympathy for a group of workers, who may be essential, but are paid more, often much more with archaic working practices, than many of the public they inconvenience. A well paid job that you need no...

    Cornwall Metro funding approved

It's a shame this doesn't include the reopening of the direct route from Newquay to St Austall via the partly open freight line. It would make timings much more attractive.

Club Avanti Premium - free 1st class ticket

I've just got to Club Avanti Premium and with it you get a free 1st class return. Very nice but it seems to be ridiculously difficult and expensive to use it if you want someone else to go with you. I've looked at 1st advanced from Nuneaton to London and they are minimum £60 one way, so use your...

    Aslef announce strike dates

Have all the other railway disputes now been settled and how do those settlements compare with what Aslef have been offered? Thanks in advance.

Disused railways reinstatement or walking cycling routes

Just picking up on one of your points 'Electric cars (Ev's) are looking less like a feasible replacement'. Anyone believes this is the case are kidding themselves. EVs are the future and will only get better and better. The EVs today are the equivalent of what petrol cars in the 1930s are to the...

    Best value long-distance

Having recently travelled on a variety of operators such as Avanti, LNER, Hull trains and TPE, I am going to put it out there that Avanti standard premium, especially on refurbished 390s, is the best value for long distance rail travel. Comfy seats, plenty of room, nicer ambience, window aligned...

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

So 807 paths will be slower than Pendolinos? If so, the Avanti management lied to me when I queried it with them at a meeting with them, when it was first announced.

    7 coach Pendolino??

On realtimetrains, the 1313 Euston to Man Pic today is shown as a 7 coach Pendolino. Is this a mistake?

What can you do if somebody sits on your booked seat ?

One of the main advantages of long distance rail travel, for me, is being able to reserve a seat, so if seat reservations would be abolished, it's much less likely we'd use the train. I suspect a lot of people are the same. Yet again, the customer would have to be inconvenienced because of a few...

Confirmed : HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped and replaced with other projects.

Apologies in advance as I'm sure this has been answered already but I never understood why HS2 was specified for 400kmh. Would rescoping all, or just Birmingham to Manchester for 300kmh, save much money?

    Break of Journey advice

Thank you in advance to all you brilliant people on here who provide advice. Can you confirm whether it is ok to break a journey from Nuneaton to Grantham, overnight in Nottingham on an off peak return fare.

    Longest Heritage Railway extension

Thanks for your responses. Maybe I should have excluded the GCR as it's so well known. Seems to be taking a long time to complete though but it's a big job. Any others out there?

    Longest Heritage Railway extension

Apologies if there is already a thread on this but I was wondering which was the current longest extension to a Heritage railway running length that was likely to happen in the next 2-5 years? Llangollen railway recently got to Corwen, but not aware of any other recent significant extensions or...

No advance tickets on LNWR or Avanti on 11th March?

Thanks all and well spotted, it is for the FA trophy QF! I'll wait until 1st March to book.

No advance tickets on LNWR or Avanti on 11th March?

It's less than 3 weeks away and there appear to be no advance tickers on 11th March between Nuneaton and London. Neither can I get any ticket options from Nuneaton to final destination of Maidstone. Anyone know why? Seems too late to be engineering work and not a strike day.

    Temporary Timetable 13th Dec - 7th Jan

I am sure there will be an agreement eventually. However, I suspect that for many rail workers it's going to be quite a pyrrhic victory when the customers don't come back, investment is reduced and redundancies happen. Us travelling public, sod 'em. I am sure the unions will probably strike over...

Avanti Restoring Some Frequencies w/b Sep 26?

They state 100 more drivers by the end of the year? Is this the start of the end of rest day working or just catching up on attrition?

    Avanti West Coast cancellations

Probably not. Would drivers be happy if any TOC did hire enough drivers so there was no need to do any overtime/work rest days or would they want compensation over the subsequent loss of additional earnings? Have any TOCs actually done that so overtime/rest day working wasn't needed? If they...

Avanti and their current problems. What could be done to improve things?

To all train drivers who support strike action or not working your rest days. I am sure you're going to get a nice pay rise out of this but please don't come on forums like this in a year or two complaining about being made redundant because passengers have stayed away and there's no need to...
