    SWR Metro fleet permanent withdrawals

The service after the slip before Epsom was run as a single line well beyond me so we didn’t get the waiting outside part, just the horn (I think) as they ran back up the Down and approached the (presumably) man in a tent at the points.

    Changing from Oyster to contactless

Good point, which reminds me to further add that if you use Apple Pay (or equivalent ‘Device’ Pay) then that is treated as a separate card to your physical card. Don’t mix and match!

    Changing from Oyster to contactless

If you register your card with your Oyster account then the journey history should be available in exactly the same way. Charges are pretty much the same. I say “pretty much” because I think there are circumstances where a days travel may be calculated in a slightly smarter manner to come out a...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Worst case (for me) I guess it’s a bus to Cheam and try my luck into London Bridge if the Waterloo services don’t pick up or are too full. Pre 2015, or whenever it was, they used to run a full service around here without 456s, 442s and 707s so that’s certainly possible. What I don’t know is...

Easing of Covid rules in England, including removal of "plan B" measures

I think, as a society, we’re all far too precious about stuff like that. People have coped with generations of change (in the last century more than others of course). This is just one more iteration and people will cope. They always do.

Easing of Covid rules in England, including removal of "plan B" measures

No, not at you at all. My apologies. it was more that, in the moment, I found it somewhat distasteful to pile into some random parents off the internet just because they took a different decision to the one others would have taken. It’s the partisan reaction I was, in turn, reacting to. All...

Easing of Covid rules in England, including removal of "plan B" measures

Judgemental, much? Oh yes, this is the internet, I forgot.

    SWR Metro fleet permanent withdrawals

I guess from a 10-car pre-COVID baseline with all the platform extensions done etc. then everything that isn’t a 707 is now short formed. (Yes, I know there were only ever 24 456s so not everything could be 10-car)

Thameslink Notice of intention to prosecute

Remembering, of course, that as the card had not (presumably) been used since cancellation, the Oyster system had had no opportunity to update the stored value to reflect the refund paid.

Thameslink Notice of intention to prosecute

The sticky issue is that the company responsible for revenue collection in this instance, and thus liable for any misrepresentation, is different to the company providing carriage. I assume that this is a familiar issue to those more used to reading about these sorts of situations. Are there...

Should a defection by an MP or councillor automatically trigger a byelection?

I know how the system works and how people think it works. I think if we want to react to the changes in line with how people think the system works then we need to change the way the system actually works to align with that. Having an electoral system that relates to an ideal with an...

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

Ah! Makes sense, thanks. From that viewpoint, my daughter‘s trip to Thames Ditton is actually better because 15 minutes of waiting at Raynes Park has been cut out by the new service pattern. Of course that only works while there’s space on the trains.

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

Is there etiquette around quoting yourself? Never mind. Taking the hour between 07:00 and 08:00 as I quoted earlier, I don’t see 16 carriages an hour as an improvement on the 32 we got last week or the 50/60 we got 2 years ago. How is the current service better?

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

That will only worsen from now I reckon, probably even if additional services are restored.

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

I’m not going into the “control” or “freedom” stuff I’m afraid that’s just a rather pointless excuse for an argument looking for a target. i understand the opinions, what no one has yet explained is the vehemence with which they’re held and pushed in a lot of places. Masks have been as...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

No, nor do I need to. Again, I just don’t feel that strongly either way about this. I don't know if they work or not but it costs me next to nothing to wear one except an inability to see when my glasses steam up. if medical authority says they might do some good, fine. I have a tendency to...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

I grant that’s why some may want them to go, No more than that though. All of this “have to” from people with no medical qualification is something I’ve tuned out months ago. (Can you tell I’ve been into this quite heavily on forums elsewhere? I probably shouldn’t push it here.) Edit: OK at...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

Mod Note: Posts #1 - #15 originally in this thread. The general fear and anger I see around face masks is something I just don’t understand. They’re as annoying to wear as anything on earth but I really don’t understand the “got to go” stuff. It’s hardly that much of an imposition But if they...

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

Peak service through from from Epsom into Waterloo has dropped from 6 per hour 8/10-car (pre-Covid) to 4 per hour and now down to 2 per hour 8 car (emergency). So that 16 carriages per hour instead of 50/60. I’ve no idea how full they are/were in the last 2 years since I don‘t work in London...

SWT Red Livery - still shiny on EMUs in service, how?

I once came across a pair in the bay platform at Kingston. In the debranded green, that is. I think it was driver training rather then anything more unusual, though. Edit: It was long enough ago I’m having doubts as to whether I saw them personally or on video somewhere.
