Middlesbrough station was built on the very southern edge of the newly built town.
The modern centre is now south of the railway.
Crossing from the south side of the railway to the old town is now called going "over the border."
Doncaster has now, to platform 0
You know.
Down the steps to the subway.
Up the steps to platform 3.
Along platform 3.
Up the steps to the bridge.
Over the bridge.
Down the steps to platform 0.
There are lifts!
I find the new Virgin Ticket machines recently installed at Doncaster station to be very confusing in selecting appropriate tickets, very slow to operate and difficult to get the tickets from the very low slots.
More than half of these new machines are usually out of action.
In the past delays to Transpennine trains into Doncaster which meant I missed my last bus home invariably meant that they provided me with a taxi home.
South Yorkshire increased the qualifying age so that I will get my"Bus pass" when I'm 66. At the same time they made a 50% charge for use on our local trains.
Oddly there are no "off peak" rover fares anymore in the county so no encouragement to travel outside of peak times.
As a child in the very late 50's before the family had a car our Journey from Middlesbrough to Cirencester included travelling behind a steam engine from Darlington to Cheltenham without a change. I also recall we travelled through Pontefract (which I thought was an odd name) and Chesterfield...
I feel that the change is that there are no longer the authority figures, police, park keepers, station masters etc. who would control such behaviour. These have been removed in the interests of efficiency and cost saving, apparently.
The Grand Central leaving Doncaster at 16:24 had a side window shattered in a similar way. According to the conductor this happened on the way into Doncaster.
