    Manchester to London in 1990

Just to clarify - this isn't about the fictional express to Scotland, this is about a real service that apparently ran...

    Manchester to London in 1990

Thanks for the responses. I suppose when you're talking of a train from Manchester to King's Cross it's better to link it with the Harry Potter storyline than to be perfectly accurate (and I'm also thinking it's highly likely that she doesn't remember the day in question because it's fairly...

    Manchester to London in 1990

According to JK Rowling, the Harry Potter series was first conceived on a delayed train from Manchester to London King's Cross in 1990. I'm curious, did such services run in 1990, was it a one-off due to engineering work instead, or was this just a mistake that the average person just misses...

    "Tube Challenge" Top Times website

Good luck, but don't beat it! It's one of the records I still have. By reports, I mean tell us all the lucky, unlucky, silly and clever things that happened, not the train timings - most people don't bother keeping those. Whether you ran into a closing door, or got lost, or something along...

agerj001, what challenge is Tube 1.1? Also, do you have reports?

Telltale sìgns of newbie rail travellers

Bags on seats - there's a simple solution to that dilemma. Sit in the aisle seat. As the train fills up, everyone will avoid you until the last few seats are being taken, by which point if you still don't let someone sit next to you, there's something desperately wrong with you. I commit a few...

Fastest route between South Western Main Line and King's Cross/St. Pancras?

Vauxhall, any day. Factoring in interchange time at Clapham Junction, the crawl into Victoria and how crowded it is, Vauxhall. Even at off-peak times it's so much more pleasant to change at Vauxhall. Bak/Vic at Waterloo is the best of the other options.

Overground/Crossrail takeover of Greater Anglia inners

Where do you get the entire map from? I haven't seen this map in circulation; I suppose it could just be because I'm looking in the wrong place.

    Canary Wharf Crossrail/Poplar DLR

Well, Canada Water is really close! Plus if you stand in the correct place on the Jubilee Line platforms, you can get phone signal. Ordinary 2G phone signal. Agree with you about Canary Wharf, Waterloo and West Ham. Stratford, though, that's not far unless you're at the wrong end of the train...

    LO - Barriered (Managed) stations

Add Harringay Green Lanes, South Tottenham, Walthamstow QR and Woodgrange Park to that list for the GOBLIN. South Hampstead and South Kenton on the Watford DC lines.

    London Midland at Shepherd's Bush

When looking at the layout maps of Shepherd's Bush station on the West London Line, this came up as one of the pictures of the southbound platform. Does anyone know how what I'm guessing is a London Midland Class 350 came to appear at Shepherd's Bush? Especially in LM livery, and seemingly in...

How much of the Underground map have YOU covered?

Everything currently on the map in one direction, plus the North Curve (only managed in one direction), the Kennington Loop, Battersea Park on LO, the Northern City Line (as currently) and the Point Pleasant/East Putney Curve (not LU, but worth doing all the same). Now visiting the stations...

Trivia: Furthest walk within "one" LU station?

That's not in one station, though! Waterloo and City at Bank to District Line eastbound at Monument, perhaps? Or to the DLR if the District at Monument doesn't count. Waterloo Jubilee to anything else is of similar length, though since there are travelators, not so long of a walk. King's...

Help planning a journey from Paddington to Angel

Are you doing this on a weekday? If so, take the eastbound Circle/H&C to Moorgate instead, then take the Govia Great Northern service (may be marked British Rail or First Capital Connect) to Essex Road, which is quite a bit closer than Angel. If it is a weekend, Essex Road will be closed...

Most annoying habits of other passengers.

Not much annoys me on trains, although people unwilling to move down the platform from the exit tends to do so, though I don't mind if your exit position is right next to your entrance position (entrance near front of the train, heading to terminus is the main example), also most journeys on the...

Dirtiest parts of the London rail network

I would say post morning peak on Thameslink. The trains have presumably been running up and down all night and then have to run through the peak. It was certainly full of discarded papers, sticky floors and seats with dubious samples of matter on them. This is of course when the seats didn't...

    The Transport Game (UK)

We then leave the station and board the 0755 departure on London Bus Route 81 to Hounslow West Tube Station, arriving there an hour later at 0855 Wednesday morning. N.B. You pop into the Pizza Hut across and ask for them for a pizza delivery, and feel sorry for the poor man who has to follow...
