Should Government designate Northern a decarbonisation R&D franchise?

Agree with this so much - and since Shapps seems to be keen to make a good impression at the moment, it might be worth having this post chiselled in full onto his ministerial desk. If the 769s are going to work, and if the expertise to build them well and relatively quickly has been accrued, I...

    Swanage Railway - Wareham

There's a thread detailing the ups and downs of the project over on National Preservation. Nearly there, but not quite is probably a fair summary: https://national-preservation.com/threads/project-wareham.536513/page-32

    Transport for Wales 769's

Not the one you're looking for I know. But I was just happy to see one of these things in the flesh...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

I really hope that happens. 2 car 195s would have made sense if we could have trusted the operator to use them as the building blocks for making up trains long enough for the number of passengers. But the Northern franchise area has been suffering from not enough train for the passengers for...

Making Doncaster to Leeds journeys suddenly took like time travel into the distant future:

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

These things really are a massive step up from the 185s - quieter, not as drafty and big enough (at my end of the line at any rate!) for the numbers who want use them. It is a genuine treat to walk onto the platform and realise that you'll be travelling on one.

    New routes from Teesside Airport

Fair play - and it helps to explain why the government was keen not to see Flybe vanish. But I'd guess these routes will be irrelevant for almost everyone on Teesside. My missus works for a company which might in theory use Teesside Airport. In practice, it makes more sense to them to put staff...

    Glasgow Subway new trains

That's a great catch XC90. Thanks for posting.

POLL: Which Freightliner branding do you prefer? Green or Orange?

I like G&W orange and black very much - it's reminiscent of US railroad liveries from the late sixties and early seventies. Which is why it will probably always look best applied to SD45s and similar:

TPE Class 397 ('Nova 2') construction and updates

They do look good, don't they? I can vividly remember how completely underwhelmed I was by the introduction of Class 185s (me on first Cl.185 journey: "Oh, it's full already? and I've got to wear an extra layer because doors in the saloon?"). These make me want to travel by train for train...

    Trains in movies

Bulldog Jack (1935) is well worth watching. If you've already seen it, you'll know what a cracking film it is. If you haven't, imagine that bit from the end of Speed where Dennis Hopper hijacks a Los Angeles Red Line metro train. But with Hopper replaced by a crazed Albert Einstein lookalike in...

    Trains in movies

Box of Delights. Set in GWR territory in the 1930s, lots of Severn Valley Railway at the start of the first episode. 3205 features again, but in scenes so evocative that you won't mind.

    Wirral Tramway

We loved the idea that a 19th century curate's workload and commitment to Christian ideals of brotherly love was low enough to allow the design and construction of not one but two death dealing submarines.

TPE train crew route & traction knowledge questions

Amen to that. There should be a readily understandable and robust plan to bring TPE up to the point where it can reliably run the services it should be running, and that plan should be in the public domain.

    Wirral Tramway

Renewed my acquaintance with the tramway over the weekend. If you haven't been, the tramway and museum are well worth a visit. Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society have worked wonders, putting together a lovely collection of perfectly restored trams and buses from the North West which look...

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

Finally got a ride on these things this afternoon, all the way from Lime Street back to Scarbs. The 68 on the front got the train moving really quickly on the climb out of Lime Street, and the whole experience was a world away from the overcrowded, drafty 185 that I've grown used to. It was...

    Northern 323s refurbishment and cascade

Out in the wild at Liverpool Lime Street this afternoon, and looking really crisp too: On its way to or from Warrington Bank Quay according to the destination screen at the other end. There was a freshly painted 323 at Allerton yesterday afternoon when we passed too.
