    Metrolink tram extensions

I would argue that you could re-purpose the car park to the east of the station as a bay platform.

Merseyrail (Liverpool) vs Manchester Metrolink (Manchester)

Easy, stepless access is lost in tunnels; you get off a tram you are on the street.

Merseyrail (Liverpool) vs Manchester Metrolink (Manchester)

I don't think the trams will go underground; it somewhat defeats the idea. 3rd and 4th City Crossings hopefully. Manchester could also do with a north/south u/g heavy rail link to take the pressure off the Oxford RD/Deansgate/Castlefield bottleneck Similarly Liverpool could do with trams.

Trivia: Busiest level crossings by both road and rail usage combined

You beat me to it. My only comment is that there are more trams, they are every 6 minutes in each direction; if my maths is correct that's 20 an hour

I once boarded a Leeds train at Oxford Road, it was due to go Piccadilly/Guide Bridge/ Stalyvegas; but something had failed at Piccadilly and we reversed out and stopped just short of Salford Crescent before going forward via Victoria to Leeds

    Quintinshill rail disaster (1915)

Slightly off topic, but the county of Dumfries and Galloway has suffered the worst rail accident, worse air accident and worse ferry accident in terms of numbers of deaths. Or so I'm told. Rail - Quintishall - 1915 - 226 deaths Air - Lockerbie - 1988 - 259 deaths Ferry - MV Princess Victoria in...
