Nigel Harris to stand down as RAIL editor

Haven’t been able to read Rail since they switched to that weird cheap paper, feels horrible to hold. Good luck to Mr Harris though, he did at least invoke reactions which is what columnists do!

    Tyne and Wear Metro Strikes

That could be interesting if the Go North East bus strike is still on at the same time.

SWR to withdraw public access to Guildford Station Footbridge

I’m not familiar with Guildford but is the footbridge wide enough that a fence down the middle, separating the paid/not paid traffic (like at Kensington Olympia) could be used?

Confirmed : HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped and replaced with other projects.

I suppose it doesn't explicitly say it's reopening as rail - might just get tarmac'ed over and become a bus lane!

Confirmed : HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped and replaced with other projects.

The "North East" section of the gov's list explicitly mentions Leamside reopening: Reopening stations: Communities in the North East will be reconnected, including a new station at Ferryhill, Co Durham. The Leamside line, closed in 1964, will also be reopened.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Maybe the rule (if it exists) only applies in tunnels? I’ve been stuck in a broken-down unit on the QE2 bridge before, they attached the “rescue” unit while we were still on-board. I suspect it’s much safer doing that than walking a train full of people across the bridge!

Will Tyne and Wear metro frequency be increasing once new units are in service?

Thanks - always thought 12 minute frequency was a bit "unambitious" for a metro/rapid transit system!

Will Tyne and Wear metro frequency be increasing once new units are in service?

Have Nexus ever said what they expect the frequency to be once the new fleet is operating in its entirety?

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Are the 777s similar enough to the 555s that similar issues may end up occurring on the T&W metro later in the year?

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Seeing HSTs on that stretch of line must've been something!

Loco-Hauling vs Multiple Units for InterCity Operations.

Sorry if it’s a noddy question (I don’t generally follow what’s happening in TPE land) but what exactly backfired with their LCHS stock?

LNER unreliability caused by staff shortages

How are Lumo and Grand Central doing? I’d certainly consider either over LNER at the minute.

National Highways boss implies that major road building maybe ending

And then, thinking about a bit further north up the A3, would this assumption of no new roads mean that Guildford wouldn't get the A3 bypass it's been needing for years?

National Highways boss implies that major road building maybe ending

Interesting comment from the National Highways boss but I suppose he’s just saying something that’s kind of been reality for a while anyway? I wonder if something like the Hindhead Tunnel would still get built if it was starting now.

Northumberland Line to be re-opened to passengers

To be fair I reckon there’s at least a partial case to be made just for the leisure/tourism market in and around Kielder. Then you’ve also got the logging freight which I think someone else mentioned. Obviously a new route would need to be found for the bit of line now under the water but not...

English City Regions to get £6.9 billion for transport funding

Yep, £95m last year for Metro Flow, £337m for new trains and some additional funding last year to keep Metro running during the pandemic so T&W has done ok in terms of government support recently.

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

What does a TOC do with seat reservations made on an old layout (eg mk4 coaches) when a new train (eg Azuma) comes into service?
