UK to Sorrento, Italy by train

Museo H Zero in Florence - excellent little model railway museum in the heart of the city. Think a smaller version of Hamburg's Minatur Wunderland. https://www.hzero.com/en Actually, Florence in generally is a beautiful place to stop off and visit for a day or two.

End of the line for Paris’ iconic metro ticket

I was able to top up the two anonymous cards we bought on our trip to Paris this spring using my smartphone and the NFC function. Pretty handy for buying passes/tickets without having to go to a ticket machine.

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

I have to say, these new trains do look really good.

    4G on the tube

Don't see why this would be a problem. There's 4G coverage everywhere on the Tokyo Metro (I was there last week) and talking on phones on the trains over there is generally frowned upon. Most people were simply messaging or web surfing.

[Drawings] Japan Keisei Electric Railway "Skyliner"

Rode one of these to and from Narita during my trip to Tokyo last week. The seat legroom is amazing and it's a very comfortable ride. :)

Metropolitan Line Extension (MLX/Croxley Rail Link)

2020 isn't really that far away when you think about it.

London Underground Station Staff Strike February 5th and 7th

I've walked up City Road to Angel many times. Usually takes me no more than 15-20 mins, so perfectly feasible to walk between those two stations in less than an hour.

    Travel advice please for NYC

You can also take the A subway train (towards Far Rockaway) to Howard Beach and get the Airtrain from there.

    Trivia: Most confusing Station?

No mention of Clapham Junction? Fine if you're heading for Victoria, Waterloo or the Overground but try to head somewhere on the SWT suburban lines and you have to spend a few minutes studying the departure board to know which platform you need to trek to.

Overhanging tree rips roof off bus in Holborn

I regularly use the 68 along this stretch and I'm not surprised that this has happened (thankfully not to a bus I'm on). It's not unknown for buses to speed along the stretch trying to beat the traffic lights at Aldwych. In fact there has been several occasions where it feels like the bus just...

NY Subway - Express v Local

I think it'll only alleviate the Lexington Avenue line somewhat. Commuters still pile off Metro North trains at Grand Central and some will need to head downtown and their only option is the 4/5/6. I really think the MTA need to consider some sort of Crossrail scheme linking up Metro North with...

Chiltern's plan to re-open BMW line to passenger traffic

Being a former Blackbird Leys resident this is certainly a welcome development. If it's going to be served by trains, then, (conflicts at Kennington aside), it makes perfect sense to just extend the Marylebone services down to Cowley with the possibility of an extra Oxford-Cowley shuttle here...

Why did we go for ticket barriers at mainline stations?

The closest we have to ticket validation is touching in with an Oyster card in London. An Oyster is invalid if it isn't touched in (especially with PAYG cards). The DLR is gateless on most of it's network, which relies on people's honesty when using it.

    New York for Spotting Trains?

Another heads up for Larchmont (my dad and family live there). Rye is also worth a visit. Lots of nice little towns (well it's actually just urban sprawl) along the NE Corridor up into Connecticut. Greenwich and Stamford are also worth a visit. Lots of Amtrak services stop at Stamford, CT...

Child in buggy gets blown onto tube track

Media outlets saying it fell seconds before a train arrived but it looks like to me the train had just departed the station before the buggy got sucked onto the tracks (caused by the departing train). Of course there was probably another train only a minute or so behind so still nerve racking...

Belgium Summer Deal 8-euro tickets anywhere

They were doing this deal when I was in Belgium in July 2012.

    Chiltern Oxford Link completed

Thames Trains used to run trains from Oxford to Gatwick via Reading (via the North Downs Line with a reversal at Redhill) during the 90's. Surely that way again makes more logical sense.

    Buying tickets in NL

I always select "Credit Card" when paying with my debit card on a foreign ticket machine and it always works. It's probably to do with the way the transaction is handled by Visa etc.
