The bridge deck beams and parapet walls for the section of Chulsey Gate bridge spanning the running lines have been erected this week. There are two more sections to do covering the area where the lines into the old sidings used to be. New drainage was also installed between Westhoughton...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

On a journey from Wigan to Stalybridge yesterday we saw three 769 sets on the Southport - Stalybridge service, also when dog walking by the railway near Lostock I almost always see 769 on the services that I expect them to be on. Are they now more reliable or am I being too optimistic?

Looking at work already done and work with planning approvals in place, at least five bridges are to be or have been totally rebuilt, Chulsey Gate, bridge 7 near the M61, the golf course, Jacks Lane, and Hindley station. Were these taken into account when NR announced the cost savings which...

Murphys rebuilt bridge 7 near the M61, a few years back they also rebuilt a number of bridges between Bolton and Adlington on the Manchester - Euxton electrification, including the one by the station at Lostock at the start of the Lostock - Crow Nest line, at least two of the bridges involved...

NR made two planning applications on 6th September for bridge replacements. One is for Old Lane (Westhoughton Golf Club) and the other is for a bridge at Jacks Lane, a small bridge between Old Lane and Crow Nest junction. There is also a notice on the council planning website apologising for...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

During my daily one hour dog walking routine along the Middlebrook I usually see two services which should be 769s. Just recently, they have all been 769s, is their reliability improving, or have I just been lucky.

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

It's only a personal opinion, but the bridge at Chulsey Gate Lane in Chew Moor needs some attention, it's a wide bridge as it also covered the entrance to the old sidings at Lostock. The bridge is in three sections supported by two sets of steel columns similar to the one supporting the old...

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

I have been told by contractors that one of the other bridges to be rebuilt is the one leading to Westhoughton golf course. This bridge currently has an approximately one metre high wooden palisade fence as a parapet above the line. I was also told that the bridge at Crow Nest is to be raised.

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

I arrived at bridge 7 at 11am on Sunday to find that all the bridge beams were in place, the work had started as soon as the line closed on Saturday night. I was told that Murphys will be on site until May, although Bolton MBC say that the footpath will be open by end March. Buckinghams are...

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

Bridge 7 next to the M61 is coming down this morning. All the footpaths leading to the bridge were closed, so difficult to get photos, best ones are attached. Part of the £2.3 million has been spent on a 450 metre temporary road from just off the A6 to the bridge.

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

From old OS maps the bridge was built at the same time as Lostock sidings, the two running lines went under the east side of the bridge and two tracks leading to the sidings went under the west side. The tracks would have been re-aligned when Lostock sidings and the Wingates exchange sidings...

While looking for progress on the Lostock - Wigan line electrification today, we had four sightings of 769s. I also saw three around Lostock yesterday, I am starting to think that things are improving.

I had a trip along the Lostock - Wigan line today with LDECRexile. There are more signs of work on the bridges. According Bolton Council's footpath closure notice, bridge 7, next to the M61, is to be replaced, the brick parapets have already been demolished. Work has started today on bridge 18...

    Collecting Tickets at Northern Machines

More problems with Northern ticket machines today, I bought some of their £1 journey offers last night but the machines at Bolton can't print them, neither can the ticket office staff. Tried later at Lostock, but got the same result, the machines print out the collection receipt but can't print...
