Mystery building ruin on Mottram marshalling yard

Ahh yeah, it could be. I had another look today and it's very deep but there's a metal grid about a foot from the top to stop people from falling in. I still can't work out why it doesn't show on the more recent photos but I suppose it might be buried in the bushes.

Mystery building ruin on Mottram marshalling yard

It could be, it's in about the right position. I took these photos today. The first (with no children or dog in it) is the ruins of the small series of huts. The second with children and dog is the separate building. I just don't understand why the ruins don't appear in any photo from the 70s...

Mystery building ruin on Mottram marshalling yard

Yeah, that's the point, in the marshalling yards today there is a ruin of a building which isn't shown on any of the photos I've linked and I wondered if anyone knew anything about it. I'll see if I can take a photo of it tomorrow and also some of the ruins of the buildings which are shown so...

Mystery building ruin on Mottram marshalling yard

We walk our dog around here most days and I've discovered a mystery building which doesn't appear on any photos I can find. https://www.flickr.com/photos/58585785@N08/35322176871/in/photolist-VPiozv-jELcfa-jDXsEy On this photo the ruin would be about 30 feet beyond the last of the ruined bases...

The Axe's worst closure - nominations

The Great Central's main line to London. It's only ironic it's now being viewed as an alternative route (at least in part) for HS2. It was ahead of it's time and it suffered for it.

    'Secret' 1976 Winchcombe Derailment

Am I missing something but when I look at google maps the line through Winchcombe is still there? Was it removed and then reinstated?

Would The Big Four have survived if No BR?

Thanks for the info but I meant info on how the economic slump affected LNER specifically. I'm assuming the recession caused a slump in the amount of coal, steel etc, the transport of which was one of LNER's staple sources of income. Is there any information about the reduction in LNER's...

Thanks, ordered it off Amazon :)

Would The Big Four have survived if No BR?

Ahh, that solves that question. Thanks for the info :) That's interesting, thanks for that info. Not that I'm querying your sources but as I'm interested in finding some good books to read on Great Central and LNER history, if you could confirm the source of the info just so I could find a...

    Manchester Piccadilly platform rebuilds

I've found the photos in the Scenes from the Past book which I hope I'm ok to share. (I'll remove them if necessary if there are any copyright complaints). These show that by 1960 the internal rebuild was complete. For me this is incredible considering you say it was only started in 1959...

Would The Big Four have survived if No BR?

To be fair to LNER, they were stuck with GC's debts from the London extension which were crippling and I've read somewhere that as a result of GC's debts LNER never made an operating profit in it's entire history. It would be interesting to know whether the LNER would have run a profit once...

    Manchester Piccadilly platform rebuilds

Ahh thanks, considering how big a process it must have been I can't find any photos of it or much info about it at all. Was the entire station closed during the refit?

    Manchester Piccadilly platform rebuilds

I've noticed in a few old pictures of Piccadilly that there used to be 3 lines between some of the platforms (see link below) https://nationalrailwaymuseum.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/1997-7409_lms_2971.png Does anyone know if / when the platforms were rebuilt as I can't see how the 3rd...

Woodhead Line - plans to rebuild as a preserved/heritage line?

Sounds like a fantastic idea to me. Would the costs of the engine be lower with a narrow gauge? I don't know much about them you see so excuse my ignorance. In any case I don't think the idea is offensive. Better a narrow gauge than no railway at all in my opinion. :D I think it would do...

Woodhead Line - plans to rebuild as a preserved/heritage line?

I didn't know there were plans for HS3 yet? They can't decide on HS2 so I'm surprised they're planning HS3?

Woodhead Line - plans to rebuild as a preserved/heritage line?

Unfortunately I fear you're right on all points. In my "dreamland" I envisaged people coming to see the beautiful landscape in the Woodhead Valley being pulled by an engine which brings back the memories of the wonderful route that it used to be. I had visions of people parking at Woodhead or...

Woodhead Line - plans to rebuild as a preserved/heritage line?

Great points but I'd hope that if this pipe dream were taken seriously then the idea would be put to the Woodhead Line groups already in existence to see if enough volunteers were available. The engine question is a big problem unless it didn't run Steam locos. It's possible that the Great...

    Glossop station 1980s rebuild

I don't travel that bit much as I commute from Broadbottom to Piccadilly every day. However the few times I've been through Hadfield were sad seeing the ruins. I realised about the Co-Op but it just seemed weird with the old platform on the other side prior to the rebuild. I suppose the...

    Glossop station 1980s rebuild

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I have looked at Glossop station using both the map you've suggested but I couldn't work out which of the lines shown was the one still in use in the 70s. The top line is the one still used today as can be seen using the overlay function but it could be...
