Direct Aberdeen to Penzance cheaper than services with changes

This could explain why I once noticed, on a XC from Glasgow, a seat had been booked all the way to Plymouth, when it would probably have been quicker to go with (then) Virgin trains on the WCML with changes. I assumed the passenger just didn’t want the hassle of changing trains.

Former station names still in use today

Officially I believe so but I have memories of it being referred to as Tay Bridge on announcements in the 70s and 80s.

    McGill's Buses - Renfrewshire & Inverclyde

All well and good, except for those of us living in outlying areas such as Kilbarchan who have lost our direct service beyond Johnstone centre on weekday daytimes; particularly inconvenient for catching a train from Johnstone station. Would it not have been more sensible to site the interchange...

    Favourite 'Railway' confectionery

I remember them and also a “Record your own voice” machine at Perth station where for the princely sum of about 3/6 you could make your own record. I pestered my parents to let me do this to no avail, wouldn’t have bee much point anyway as we didn’t possess a record player.

Trivia: Trains Leaving The Same Stations At The Same Time And Going To The Same Destinations

It was at one time but if my memory serves me correctly most recently it was Irvine, I’d need to look at an old timetable to check. Also, previously the express would stop at Paisley GS to pick up only, the most recent ones didn’t.

Pre Covid, Glasgow Central had express trains to Ayr at xx00 and xx30, first stop Irvine, followed four minutes later by stoppers. Remains to be seen if they will be fully reinstated once current issues are over.

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

From a newspaper in the 70s: in Edinburgh a man who worked near Waverley station and lived near Haymarket decided to take the train home one night as Princes Street was particularly congested so a bus would have taken ages and he couldn’t be bothered walking. The train shot through Haymarket and...

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

I read about a similar story in reverse in the Perthshire Advertiser in the early 70s. A chap got really drunk on his stag night the night before his wedding in Perth. For a laugh his “mates” put him on the overnight train to London. He woke up at Crewe. He found a taxi driver who agreed to...
