Ravensthorpe to Heaton Lodge rationalisation under British Rail

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/transpennine-route-upgrade-and-electrification-updates-cp6.88054 It would be interesting to know how long it took British Railways (was it in the 70s) when they reduced the workable Ravensthorpe to Heaton lodge 4 tracks with...

    EMR class 156s for Northern

There may be an earlier thread on this. The other day I checked on RTT on the 156/4 supposedly due to be transferred to Northern and non seemed to be in use on that day. Are they in store? Do EMR have sufficient 170s now to allow the 156s to be sent North to allow Northern to withdraw its...

Do any Electric buses run on hilly routes?

Hi. Living in the Pennines I've often wondered how the current electric buses would fare on some of my local routes. As far as I can see they only seem to be deployed on the flatlands of Leeds, York, Manchester etc. I'd love to see how they faired on the 1000ft Queensbury hump between Halifax...

    Class 8xx permitted speeds

Hi I'm sure this may be covered on one of the various 8xx threads. Watching the excellent Don Coffey 185 cab ride from Hull to Man pic I was stuck by it being limited to 75mph where sprinters were allowed 90mph I wonder where the class 8xx multiple units are with the various speed signs like SP...

Remaining single lines with traditional token working.

Hi With the demise of traditional tokens on the Harrogat York line by the 5th Dec I thought id start a separate thread to the Harrogate line one and the remaining semaphores thereads Cant be many single lines left with signalmen and traditional token working. K

    Northern reallocations 14th Sept

Few moves around over the last few days. Heaton has gained a couple of Cummings engined 158s from NL and some 156s from NH. Neville hill now has the bulk of the 150/2s and has lost 11 153s to NH (good riddance) K

Don Coffey cab ride video discussion

Hi I was watching Don's latest excellent Cab ride from Chester to Birminghan via Shewsbury over a couple of nights. On trying to resume it it had disappeared along with his other recent ones. Anyone any feedback? K

    York to Harrogate signalling

I hear that theres some work going on between Knaresborogh and Skelton junctions with some LED signals erected and work on the crossings. Perhaps the work to control the line from York has been advanced. Does this leave the Whitby branch as the last outpost of semaphores and tokens in Northern...

    Gradient profiles.

Hi My son was asking me if theres a source of gradient profiles particularly for lines around Northern land. I've seen some for various main lines but not for secondary ones. Thanks K

Electrifcation around London why not Marylebone?

In these difficult times I thought I'd start a thread to discuss Electrification around london. Would it be true to say the only non electrified part apart from sidings and small connections is Marylebone and the Chiltern lines. In the age of minimising pollution seem a bit strange for just one...

Northern post pacer and PRM allocations

Note that in this months Todays railways 158 790 has moved from NL to Heaton to join the 16 Perkins engined ones 158 815-17, 842-45, 48-51, 53, 55, 59-61 which means Heaton is all 158 and 156 ?-?. Although Northern allocations is not always an indication of where units are based my best guess...

Should TPE Mk5 sets be extended to 6 cars?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/tpe-mark-5a-coaching-stock-progress.143579/page-184#post-4240732 I don't know where the changeover point is between having all those engines hung under the coach floors against an 80tonne class 68 but I wonder if 6 rather than 5...

Northern App not working charged full fare machine fares

My son recently tried to use the Northern app to buy a ticket from Guisely to Leeds but the app was not working. On boarding the train he went straight to the conductor and showed her the problem but she insisted on charging him the full fare. This along with a separate issue I had where the...

Class 158s - should the opening hopper windows be sealed?

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/northern-class-170s.157388/page-23#post-4030539 Hmm 80%, you mustn't be Northern land, as watching the world go by at Sowerby Bridge the other day not one 158 passed me without the emergency hoppers open. Seal em up as Ian...

Trains with no working disabled toilet won't be allowed to run? True or false?

Mod Note: Posts #1 - #12 originally in this thread. On the subject of toilets someone told me that after 31st Dec trains with no working disabled toilet will not be allowed to run. Is this true? K

Diesel fumes and air quality inside trains.

During my annual train trip out last week I was struck by the diesel fog which filled both the 142 and thr return 150 while passing through Morley tunnel. It became quite noxious. Perhaps someone should check polution in tunnels as well as stations and city centres. With Grayling nailing his...

Northern 158 air-con still not working in hot weather

With yesterdays belated hot weather I tought it would be a shame not to have the annual bash at Northerns boil you alive 158s. Watching the world go by at sowerby bridge yesterday I didn't see a single 158 with its emergency ventilators shut so that's likely none with air con working. A poor...

    Calder Valley running times.

Talking to a former Steam man a while back he said they could do Bradford to Man vic in under the hour admittedly with few stops. I'd like to compare the current timetable with a steam timetable. Anyone help? Sad to see the new times introduced today with despite the new signalling no...
