NYMR and Esk Valley line musings

Do they still have access to Glaisdale, in case they need to divert from Grosmont?

Magnet fisher pulls railway track explosives from Long Melford river

Probably where the fishermen was parked. Find an interesting tin can, take it back to the car and open it ... oh dear! Full marks to them for calling the police, not just chucking them back in the river.

    NYMR Whitby

There's not one at Grosmont any more, it was only a small one and seems to have been removed in BR days. Even if it was usable, it's preferred to have the smokebox uphill on the long gradient to Goathland and give more water at the firebox end of the boiler.

LNER Class 91/Mk4 service status/withdrawals/2021 refurbishment

Good to hear that, hope they can contribute lots of cash to a worthy cause.

    Planning Sim

Railway Operation Simulator can do that, you can set up line speeds and distances on tracks, power and max speed on trains, and get a service which is close to real-world performance. Very fiddly and with some limitations, but free. https://www.railwayoperationsimulator.com/

Modern Railways: LNER and compulsory reservations

You could frame it as a positive too, with the current ticket there is no guarantee that you"ll be carried by a train (not a bus/taxi), or even, at all to your destination. Accepting a booking with reservation puts more of a requirement on the TOC that they have the obligation to carry you...

Trivia: What things don't you see on buses these days?

I forgot to say, the bus with us school kids crammed onto it was probably running with the destination blind "Duplicate". Several buses ran in the timetabled path but only one showed the normal destination. That afternoon service was the only time I saw it used, dont't know how common it was.

Trivia: What things don't you see on buses these days?

Related, "3 to a seat" instruction from the driver or supervisor on school runs, so three kids cram onto a bench seat and you can get 50% more than the stated capacity of passengers onboard. Never knew if that was legal or not.

Things that used to be common place in people’s homes

And big, ornamental cigarette lighters. "Sausage dog" draft excluders for internal doors. Those plastic, circular ventilators in kitchen windows. How many houses still have their built-in coal bunker? or pantry? (My house has had both knocked through to extend the kitchen, before I bought it)

Definitely - thank you for posting.

    Through fares to heritage railways

Not valid on Northern services AFAIK although I"ve had one accepted when there was disruption, which is probably true for both operators. When NYMR first ran to Whitby the tickets were interavailable, but apparently this led to complaints from customers who caught the school train out of Whitby...

Flashback - the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 1992.

Thanks for that, very nice.1992 you mean, even better. 80135 which seemed to keep the entire service running. Blue and grey Mk1s as delivered to the line Grosmont Crossing signal box when it was just a frame in a shed All the stations in red and cream. Lots of track maintenance, and the odd...

    UK face coverings discussion

Write and tell them you disagree, tell your SU or GSA too. It's unenforcable and useless in a shared room. Sadly the University is trapped and needs to go above and beyond with what it does, when faced with a genuine threat of being closed down, and news reports like...

What did your driving test involve?

I passed my test first time, thanks mostly to a great driving instructor. Doing the real test with a stranger in the passenger seat was easier than the mock test with my instructor who knew all my weak points. We did an ermergency stop about 5 minutes in, across a busy crossroads - it wasn't...

    Derailment Ardwick depot 17/12/19

More likely the production company just blurring any company they don't have a contract with. They also seem to blur the faces of any children, even in public areas.

Additional retailers to reopen from June 15th

The phone shops' stock will have been recalled for online orders, and can fit in a small van anyway. The others are a bit less certain though.

    Impact on Universities

That sounds really bad, which University is this? University of York near me has just announced it's plans to reopen the library starting July. I'd start complaining to the Student or Graduate Union and asking the Uni how you transfer your credits elsewhere (aka the mobile phone contract method...

    Trackside vegetation on preserved lines

Some railways have hired in the weedkiller train from the mainline when it's in the area, not sure if this still happens. For instance at the MHR (not my vid)
