Information for GTR Southern passengers during strike (no DOO discussion)

I was on a short-formed train which did not appear to have an OBS on board, and the drivers announcement was along the lines of "Please move as much as possible into the train, first class... well don't worry about first class, please move inside the train".

Information for GTR Southern passengers during strike (no DOO discussion)

The 1904 and 1919 (from memory, they aren't on RTT) from Clapham Junction were both advertised as Gatwick Express stopping at Clapham Junction and East Croydon as well. Both were 5 cars as well, which was mental.

Who have been the best TOCs so far?

Not sure if it counts, and it may be a controversial one, but London Overground. Tidy stations, tidy trains, commuted for over 2 years on the NLL and its punctuality was great. So yeah, the seats aren't great on the 378s, and the journey timing is quite... padded. But it is reliable...

Most ridiculous or inappropriate food you've seen being eaten on a train

I saw a South Asian family unpack a full tiffin-box-style setup with a full spread of Chapattis, Rice and Curry around a table of 4. I was more intrigued than anything else. The smell was probably inappropriate though.

GTR & LOROL disruption on 18-19 July 2016

Out of interest, how can you even monitor for these sorts of things? Does Network Rail have special.... sub-surface ground penetrating sensors/radars...? Which they can deploy on the back of a loco and run at low speed overnights....? </not a geologist>

Yup, you get a nice view of a semaphore signal from Gladstone park.

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

I have always found East Croydon in the AM Peak to be helpful, clear and articulate.

Thanks for the thorough information tsr. Is it possible the sinkhole is related to the hot weather or something? </Not a Geology expert>

    Railways under Theresa May administration

You say that, but I am pretty sure the commuters of Sussex/Surrey/South London etc would have something to say about the current debacle on GTR, and that may rate in the 5-10 range of their list of priorities.... My mum, dad and sister (not rail enthusiasts, daily Southern users) put the...

    Train SPAD today on Southern

What a coincidence, I was on that train as well. Luckily I needed to be somewhere between Selhurst and East Croydon so I just walked from Selhurst. What stood out what the guard constantly keeping people updated, I know Southern get a lot of flak (whether its justified is a different...

Information for GTR Southern passengers during strike (no DOO discussion)

I was on a short-formed Cat/Tatt train (the tatt part was cancelled, so it was only 4 carriages) yesterday during the PM peak - it was already 10 minutes late and the train after was cancelled. At Balham when people couldn't board there was nearly a fight - tempers were fraying, people were...

    Are GTR finished?

The interview with the Rail minister by the Argus makes me think GTR are going nowhere :/ http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/14557427.Rail_Minister__Unions_are_launching_a_war_on_passengers/

why are there no late night trains on SWT network

Here was me thinking the last Southern metro from London Victoria at 0042 is a bit early on a Friday night... Its amazing how living in London can really skew your sense of perspective on things like this :s

Southern DOO: ASLEF members vote 79.1% for revised deal

As part of this discussion I have seen talk about how train dispatch works in other countries. When I was in Japan, train dispatch procedures were a joy to watch Here is a video showing it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAxXYoxs3QY Note the guard in the rear cab watches out from...

    0pmh to top speed timings

Not quite on heavy rail, but on the stretch of the Jubilee/Metropolitan line from Wembley Park to Finchley Road, a 1996 Stock Jubilee line train will easily out-accelerate the Metropolitan line S stock. Either both from a stand when both leave Wembley Park, or even from a Jubilee line stop...

Thameslink - is there something wrong with the timetable when:

I may be mistaken, but isn't there a new train traffic management system by Hitachi that will be employed by Thameslink which will help with the issue/confusion of trains running out of order or late through the core. Ie if train A is running 5 minutes late and would hold up train B which would...

    Southern "Real-Time" PID Message

This morning whilst waiting in queue of trains from Clapham Junction to Balham, I noticed on the (Class 455) saloon PIDs the following message (roughly, from memory): New: Delays to London bound services due to a passenger taken ill at Clapham Junction, stopping services to London Victoria...
