Heritage Railways' Policies on Lineside Photographers in Hi-Vis

I was under the impression that the current Heritage Railways Association guidance was against issuing passes to 'pure' amatuer photographers. The NNR certainly used to issue them on a similar scheme but then withdrew these and restricted to working members, and as I remember the communications...

    Liskeard signaller update

Knew the chap in question- Was the treasurer of our model railway club at the time.

East Yelland power station, North Devon.

If you want to start on small-scale hydro plants as opposed to the classic coal burners, there's also one at Morewelham ;) Mary Tavy is 2.6mwh, Morewllham 640kwh Probably more in Cornwall somewhere, but I'd have to think / look things up.....

East Yelland power station, North Devon.

Yep, within half a mile or so, 39mwh Closed 18th March 1974 (same date as Newton Abbot- 35mwh there though) Exeter closed 1955 basically when the National Grid came into being. No mwh figure I can see, so it would have been pretty smallish.

East Yelland power station, North Devon.

Definitely. That would be Plymouth 'B' opened 1951 on the banks of the Plym. Closed 1981, demolished 1992.

    Diesel Mechanical Multiple Unit performance

Whilst not a developer for RAIL Simulator, I've been maintaining OpenBVE for the past 10 years, so I've got a pretty good idea of the internals. Any simulator is at heart a bunch of compromises heaped upon compromises. Physics simulation is generally provided by a bunch of magic numbers, and I...

Steam loco leaving unidentified station, interesting passenger shelter

It's even the same loco ;) No. 7 on both and the general fittings etc. match nicely.

Latest appearance of early BR "coloured" station signs?

Calstock is almost certainly a replica. In the Wessex Trains era, all the signs were replaced with Tamar Valley Line branded things (IIRC a purplish bottom stripe + Calstock Viaduct in a roundel) and as far as I remember Calstock had this. Before that IIRC it was regional railways blue / white...

How do six wheeled bogies take bends?

Yes but no :p There is a degree of lateral movement in both the bogie axle and for that matter the track itself. The wheelsets also shift in position on the railhead. Axles can also have steering arms attached to alter thier angle based upon the position of the other wheels. Any given piece of...

North Norfolk Railway plans to extend into Holt could cost £5m

Longer than that..... He's been pushing it ever since the Melton Constable line closed (early 60s) in one form or another. Some involvement in the early M&GNJRS / NNR, but nothing in the last 30 odd years. https://norfolk-orbital-railway.co.uk/about-us/ (IIRC there's also a farmer somewhere...

North Norfolk Railway plans to extend into Holt could cost £5m

The Norfolk Orbital Railway is (essentially) one grade A crackpot. He's bought a small strip of land across the road from Holt station, and has grand visions of going round via Melton Constable IIRC. Been going for as long as I can remember, and this plan is essentially a laughing stock in the...

    Identifying a signalman (1907)

https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co220954/coat-midland-railway-signalman-no-1001-coat Single row of buttons, which match none of those in the picture. I'd suspect those not in white to be porters.

    D7659

Technically Sheringham, as that's where the offloading ramp is ;) Don't forget it's not just the gala, there will be photo charters & similar booked as well whilst it's at the NNR. It's not likely to turn a massive profit for the owners, but it'll make some money from hire fees.

    Class 20s from different depots

I think D8091 is unlikely. This pic shows it had Blue-Star bufferbeam emblems and black ringed headcode disks a few years later (unlikely to have had a major repaint, as it's got the painted out D on the cab): https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/39022159692/

Drivers eye view: What interesting things have you seen?

That reminds me of the time we chased a deer most of the way from Bodmin Road to Bodmin General with a Large Prarie on a cold damp winter day. As anyone who had been on this line knows, stopping halfway up in these conditions invariably ends up with the 08 being called out to rescue you. No...

Gold-painted points - where were they?

I'm reasonably certain the M&GNJRS have one in the Holt museum, although I don't know if it's on display. It's IIRC local & a relatively recently acquisition, although I can't find it online at the minute....

    Help identifying cigarette cards

They look like press shots to me. Might have found their way onto another card series, but I suspect generic BR publicity images.

Oldest track "chairs" in use on a mainline UK railway?

http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/lostwithiel-exc-to-sr-germans.html You're thinking of the sand drag protecting the single line section of Largin / St. Pinnock viaducts. Search for Largin Catch Points and the Sand Drag in page, there's no way to link halfway down. (Whether it's true or...

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

Full details / plans of this are in Larry Crosier's Mechanical Signalling in Plymouth (SRS). Pretty extensive system going to all the main basins etc.

Llangollen Railway Its short term future?.

Llangollen IIRC, but whether that was the railway themselves or an owner I don't know offhand. E1668E, so it's actually a Thompson, but pretty much the same difference. http://www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=957 (n.b. I'm a M&GNJRS member and I suppose interested party, as opposed...
