    Carlisle Station Improvements

The demolition of the old pools at the back of the station is due to start today, the Council have emphasised that the adjacent Turkish Baths will be protected, and will take approximately six weeks.

Stations justifying an additional platform if space permitted

Carlisle. A platfrom 0 was touted if HS2 came here (Ho ho ho), but the sidings by platform 1 could easily be developed for another platfom, or even two - one through and one for the West Cumbria line (thus removing it sometimes blocking platforms 1 and 3 currently) and still have a couple of...

Edinburgh-London rail journeys "to be cut to 4 hours"

When the proposed ECML recast was postponed previously, I think it was May 21 (apologies if wrong), there were proposals for later connectivity from the likes of Newcastle onto the branch lines at much later times on a weekend than currently. Does anyone know if this will still be the case? A...

    Carlisle Station Improvements

The buildings opposite are being readied to become the new university site. All those big empty buildings over the road? Expect a swathe of new accomodation for students soon!

    Carlisle Station Improvements

Had an appointment in Carlisle today, so swung round that way. Big mistake! They were removing the temporary lights, whilst the new ones were still covered up. Chaotic is the word!

    Carlisle Station Improvements

Demolition has begun on the old Staples store on the ‘other’ side of the station. Seems the old swimming pool will go in January too. For those familiar with the area, the mini roundabout into that area off James Street, is having traffic lights installed now instead of said roundabout. Be...

I’ve been away the last couple of weeks, when did this happen? A real shame!

Issues North of Newcastle - Plessey Viaduct - 09/10 (onwards)

Apologies for going off topic, do you know when this is planned for? Thanks!

Severe weather Saturday 7th October, some ScotRail services suspended.

I travelled from Carlisle to Preston (and back) yesterday, as part of a trip to Horwich Parkway for the Football. A lot of the confusion yesterday, came down to the fact Avanti have woefully inaccurate communications. We were booked on the 10:50 south. This was cancelled ‘officially’ but a...

    Carlisle Ticket Office

Sign on windows this evening saying ticket office will be closed from 16:55 from today to Saturday inclusive due to ‘staff shortage’. As previously said, a regular occurence these days!

Regularly opened late or closed early these days. Hit and miss would be the best description!

A Bad evening on the WCML north of Carlisle 13/08/23

Interesting, as that goes against the order (I think you possibly replied to myself on another thread about WCML signalling) that has been reported - Warrington, then Preston, then Carlisle, between 2030 and 2035?

Lines where semaphore signals are still used

When I walk the dog over from Wetheral to Great Corby you can see one on each line if you look to the left as you cross the road by the signalbox. Handy for knowing which direction the train is coming from! Also Sandy Lane foot crossing further along is adjacent to another semaphore, possibly...

    WCML signalling

I read that dates were roughly: 2030 - Warrington 2032 - Preston 2035 - Carlisle All connected to various CP7 works. Then later read that some of this work will moved to CP8. Will this affect those dates? (Info was taken from articles in Rail Magazine over the last couple of months!)

    Northern cancellations getting worse

Pathetic showing on the Tyne Valley Line yesterday evening with several trains cancelled, including the last two from Newcastle to Carlisle (2023 and 2127). Left the 1923 as the last train to head west, very poor!

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

I’ve lived in Wetheral a good few years and never heard it referred to as ‘Corby Bridge’! Always ‘Wetheral Viaduct’. :)

London Northwestern Overcrowding to Northampton every Saturday Night

That’s because the Lakes gets invaded by all and sundry so we decamp to the Metro or Glasgow/Edinburgh for trips out!

    Unite Network Rail Strikes Off

Is there anywhere that has a rough breakdown of what percentage of Network Rail employees are in the various unions, indeed, even those who are affiliated to none?

    Northern cancellations getting worse

Great start back on the Tyne Valley late afternoon, with the 1623 and 1640 to Carlisle both cancelled, lovely gap from 1540 to 1723! Luckily I did some christmas shopping to fill my time but not the best look on the day the line fully reopened!
