    Bizarre prices from Birmingham

I think the +1 is "crosscountry and one other operator" rather than representing an extra person. Two key things to understand. 1. Rail ticketing sites were traditionally built around selling the passenger ONE ticket for their whole journey wherever possible. More recently "splittling" sites...

Trip Report - Merseyrail to Southport, Northern to Wigan and Bolton - 2024/04/13

If you've got time and would like something different you could try using the subway instead, probablly slower than the footbridge though.

[Trivia] Largest UK railway station to have a subway and/or footbridge but no lifts?

According to the Map on NRE, preston has a footbridge and two subways, one subway has ramps while the other has lifts. It seems you have to use either stairs or a ramp to exit the station though.

[Trivia] Largest UK railway station to have a subway and/or footbridge but no lifts?

I guess that comes down to how you define "station". The crossrail platforms are connected to moorgate station but are nominally part of Liverpool Street.

[Trivia] Largest UK railway station to have a subway and/or footbridge but no lifts?

I suspect the answer to the question of busiest station without step-free access on national rail is moorgate.

[Trivia] Largest UK railway station to have a subway and/or footbridge but no lifts?

These are not the same thing. For example Manchester oxford Road has lifts to take you from platforms 4/5 (where the entrance is) to platforms 2/3, but only has stairs to take you to platform 1.

Getting to Heathrow - cheap vs expensive

Manchester still has a "runway visitor park", though its a bit of a pain to get to without a car. The nearest bus stops seem to be at the world freight terminal.

What is the point of Old Oak Common?

Which I do, and which I'm sure those designing HS2 did. If you are arguing that HS2 has been subject to crippling cutbacks that put the whole value of the line in question, I wouldn't disagree.

What is the point of Old Oak Common?

I would hope that they considered multiple options for getting into London, looking at both what connectivity each would provide and how destructive it would be. Euston has overall pretty good connectivity with 5 underground lines (one of which is essentially two conjoined lines). OOC adds the...

Is this me or are train companies offering off peak returns that are not valid?

The key part of their answer is "if you have a huddersfield to leeds return". Peak restrictions depend on the ticket you hold. It is very common for some off-peak tickets to be valid on a given train, while others are not. Unfortunately the railway does a very poor job of communicating this to...

Getting to Heathrow - cheap vs expensive

Yeah, I've noticed that before, A few possible reasons spring to mind but I don't know what was or wasn't going through the heads of the negotiators/planners. 1. While the new Thameslink platforms at St Pancras Thameslink now have their own gateline, it's predecessor Kings Cross Thameslink was...

Getting to Heathrow - cheap vs expensive

One issue with PAYG schemes is that they can only set fares based on the data they actually have. If you change from Rail to Undergound at a south London terminal (London Bridge, Victoria, Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Waterloo or Waterloo East), the system can see that because the...

Getting to Heathrow - cheap vs expensive

It seems there are quite a lot of different different fares from Crystal palace to Heathrow terminal 5. For journeys to the underground station: The default fare is £5.60 at all times. This seems to be a zone 1-6 fare on the TFL scale with no off-peak discounts available. I presume this is...

What is the official platform number of Liverpool Lime Street Low Level?

RTT seems to report it as "L" for trains that have departed, but A for trains that have not yet departed. This suggests to me that different systems inside network rail are not consistent with each other.

    Checking a cross-London/round-central-London routing

My understanding is that if it doesn't go through a "london terminal" it's not considered to be "via London". Each destination would have to be assessed on it's own merits. For Brighton specifically the single and return tickets are routed "✠ANY PERMITTED" so they can potentially be used both...

WCML blockade - impact on EMR services? (29/03 - 01/04)

I find it dissapointing that they don't seem to have arranged ticket acceptance on the ECML for passengers from Manchester, I'm sure they did in the past.

    Multiple Working

My understanding is that at least on older stock, regulation of maximum train speed when the leading vehicle has a higher speed rating than the vehicles behind is entirely down to the driver being correctly informed of the makeup of their train and manually keeping below the appropriate limit...

Changing to tfl at East Croydon

As I understand it. When oyster PAYG was first introduced, the overground did not exist and only rail services that had historically accepted underground tickets accepted oyster. TFL wanted to encourage people to switch to oyster so they placed entry/exit readers inside the gateline at some...

New Mills Central landslip - 6 week closure

realtimetrains claims that both the 06:40 (mentioned earlier in this thread) and the 07:48 from picadilly went via Marple. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W33763/2024-03-26/detailed#allox_id=0 Is that wrong?

    Tickets from London Thameslink

It's a problem in General, websites are planner based which means rather than going directly from customers request -> show tickets they go customers request -> journey plan -> select journey -> show tickets valid for that journey. If you type a station group, they don't remember that you have...
