First Class meal cost to produce

I loved the proper "3 course" breakfasts and silver service dinner back in the day on GNER. So much better than the "complimentary offer" these days. You could choose what you wanted from a decent menu and wine list. I'd always choose LNER based on the first class catering (even though it's...

    Avanti West Coast Shop

Is it an age thing? I always carry cash as well as my cards and phone. Some (many?) businesses prefer cash as they get a charge for card purchases, though given the prices for onboard catering perhaps the big train companies deserve a charge <D.

Can a Train Driver open doors when it’s too hot on the train if aircon doesn’t work.

A lot of trains in India simply don't have doors. Whilst I was never brave (or foolhardy) enough to hang outside like the locals, standing near the large "doorway" was a must

    Medical incidents on board trains

I am an Emergency Medicine consultant and have found some of the responses on here either terrifying, funny (we do a lot of very black humour) or occasionally sensible (thanks for those). Few points.... 1. In our department (full of emergency medicine docs and nurses) we have to have a nominated...

    Longest Shift

Not any more do doctors work 3 days with no sleep. Usual maximum is 12.5 hours these days. When I was a junior doctor back in the early 80s our weekends were 09:00 Friday morning to 17:00 Monday afternoon. I once had 5 hours sleep over a whole 80 hour weekend.

Bad day on the ECML 31/3/2022

I am a massive fan of rail travel but really do struggle to understand how it is acceptable in 2022 to take so long to shift a broken down train. Can someone from Network Rail or with inside info shed some light?

Bad day on the ECML 31/3/2022

1D31 - On time (And I am an hour late) with no on board food :frown: If only I had thought and not believed the platform staff who said catering would be as normal. Also the LNER app didn't update to say no catering until it was too late to get off and back on again. On the plus side - delay...

Bad day on the ECML 31/3/2022

Currently sitting on 1D31 (20:03) from KGX - allegedly due to depart on time. 1S31 next door has just departed for Edinburgh 49 late.

    What is your favourite train?

First Gen DMUs - loved the view from the front when I was a kid on the Brid to Scabby line. Please can the train designers bring back trains where passengers can see out of the front? I also love the sound of a Class 47 pulling away and of course the Class 43 with their original engines...

    [Trivia] I wonder if...

I wonder if there will ever be any trains as wonderful as 1st Gen DMUs - where you could see out of the front. (Answer: No :'( )

    The variety of Station Buffers

They certainly look well engineered. Some seem to be nothing more than a hefty lump of wood painted red. Interesting to know what decides which type of buffer - presumably some regional variation - but anything else?

Long station announcements - possible solution (not perfect!)

I like the idea of limiting announcements - except last minute changes or anything urgent. All airports seem to be that way now - what is different between checking a monitor for a platform vs a departure gate?

    Specials Route Knowledge

Blimey. That's a hell of a lot to remember - how on earth do they get the route knowledge?

Weather disruption Friday 26 November onwards - Storm Arwen

Possible very stupid question.... Given that the pictured train in the post is a freight - presumably with a mass of an awful lot - could it not just be driven very very slowly to push the tree (which appears relatively small) out of the way? I have seen a tractor (with presumably much less...

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

To be fair I'd be pretty p*ss*d off if I paid for a rail journey and got a replacement bus - no catering/no bikes/no loo/even worse leg room etc etc - as the equivalent bus journey is usually cheaper. 1636319817 What? I always thought it was apple juice
