    Abbreviations/glossary

Topic arises from my post in October, http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53289&page=4 If you're a seldom traveller who's stranded in a maze Of railway lines and timetables and noticeboard displays; An ostrich who doesn't know their EMU from their DMU, And your heart keeps going...

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Well, we're back from our Eurostar trip. Thanks SO much to all who have responded above. To summarize: We went back to the station clutching our printout of the confirmation booking. The ticket issuer sold us 2 returns to "London International (CIV)", valid until a date in December so...

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

We booked the Eurostar ticket first! then I went to our local station.

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Thanks for recent posts clarifying the situation somewhat. We want to travel from our local station (SWT) to Wimbledon, where we board a train (not SWT! ;) ) that goes direct to St Pancras International - no need for Underground/Tube. When he offered me tickets to Kings Cross I realised that...

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

copied from my first post on this thread. I do not understand "London International". Our Eurostar booking was (is) for St Pancras International, so it seemed reasonable for me to ask for a return ticket between my local station and St Pancras International.

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Thanks :) I'm on the phone now.... "Thank you for holding - we'll be with you as soon as possible" But unfamiliar to us... and not very familiar even to those who have replied!

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

What is the penalty for travelling with tickets to StP Int'l and a confirmation letter? Maximum fine? (Do they take credit cards or do we need to pay fines by cash?) And will we automatically get a criminal record?

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

This is appalling! If the SWT ticket issuer does issue tickets to StP Int'l on the basis of seeing a printout of the confirmation email, are we travelling illegally? Would we risk a fine, a crimimal record?? Should we cancel the Eurostar trip? BTW, there was no option to print the tickets...

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Oh! :o Would a printout of the email confirmation (saying "tickets to be collected at station" be acceptable, I wonder?

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

He didn't say anything about cost of the tickets! If we try to use a ticket machine, what do I enter? "Off-peak return (travelling after 0930, not returning on same day) to St Pancras International with Senior Railcard"? or what? Is the machine programmed to ask whether or not I have a...

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Cannot my question be answered unless I mention the name of our home station? For home security reasons I don't want to do so until we return! - I hope you think this is reasonable, if cautious. We will try again to buy the tickets.

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

A station on SWT. Sorry, my mention of "direct" was misleading, I know we will need to change at Wimbledon, then we go direct to StP Int'l... so what did the man at the ticket office mean about Kings Cross?

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

Thanks all :) Seems to me that I can't get from my local station direct to StP Int'l, or maybe not at all!! Could someone explain the exact type of ticket I need? (with Senior Railcard, return journey a few days later)?

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

He did offer Kings Cross (not St Pancras). I thought St P and St P Int'l were one and the same. I did not find his reply helpful. Was he following a standard procedure? I have not tried the ticket machines, presumably I would have the same problem.

Travelling Eurostar, refused ticket to StP Int'l

We have a booking on Eurostar from St Pancras International. Confirmation email said to collect tickets from the above station. I go to my local station (South West Trains) asking for tickets to St P Int'l. The following conversation took place. "Are you travelling by Eurostar?" - Yes. "Do...

    Buying a ticket in person

Is it true that, for a small station with only one ticket-issuing position/employee, every ticket bought in person (rather than from the ticket machine or online etc.) helps to keep the ticket issuer's job open? Or is the policy different depending on which train company runs the station?

    Disabled railcard question

A message from my friend on whose behalf I posted: "Re the "disability" question: some of those who replied might be wondering what, if anything, I intend to do about the trip to London. We don't need to explain all the relevant circumstances, as this is an open forum that anyone can read. I...
