Staff member assaulted at Manchester Piccadilly

Absolutely. The reason scum like this behave as they do is because they know there is little risk of being caught, and no proper punishment will be forthcoming even if they are.

Arriva rail (New cross gate) vs SE (Victoria)

Sounds like a sensible decision. I’d say focus on keeping your nose clean and then see where you are after a couple of years with a key. All the best with it!

Greater Anglia V Great Northern GTR

Whatever may or may not have happened a few years back, as per the previous poster, SE are now well off the pace in terms of pay. It’s not a matter of a couple of grand, they’re approaching £10k behind GTR for similar work. Add in a weak union, rubbish work, and lots of uncertainty about a...

Arriva rail (New cross gate) vs SE (Victoria)

Since you said SE Victoria, I’d go with that over ARL. The money at ARL is better, but the work also needs to be considered. SE Victoria still have some good (as in mainline express) work in their starter link. ARL is relentless all station stop DOO work, probably the worst work on the entire...

What is are the numbers on Class 455 destination blinds?

A couple I can recall (god knows why): 24 - Charing + - Hayes via Lewisham 25 - Cannon St - Hayes 34 - Charing + - Hayes (fast London Bridge to Ladywell) They were displayed on the networkers up until the mid 2000s until the upgraded PIS system (with...

Mess rooms from hell , places you like.

I’ll third it! The Victoria room is an absolute disgrace, even without the childish “who sits where” politics. More than once I’ve seen mice in there, and those toilets. Sheesh <(

Why are Northern allowed to cancel Sunday Services seemingly at will?

Indeed! An excellent point that is often raised but usually ignored in these discussions, as it does not suit the rabidly anti-union bias of some posters. I suspect many of them lack strong union representation of their own, and have perhaps seen their own T’s and C’s drop through the floor...

SWR Strike Action: Strikes every day in December except 1st, 12th, 25th & 26th

Most likely because the guard is checking that the train has been correctly accommodated in the platform. This is unnecessary on tube trains which are of a uniform length and are fitted with correct side door enable. In DOO land exactly the same process is required. It takes a few seconds, and...

SWR Strike Action: Strikes every day in December except 1st, 12th, 25th & 26th

Whatever the whys and wherefores of the underlying argument, if SWR management had reached agreement with the RMT, but is now dragging its feet, you can’t blame the union for reacting. If SWR had been negotiating in good faith the strikes would now be at an end.

Hunt for woman who 'burst into train driver's cabin to complain about delays'

Irrelevant comparisons to aeroplanes and coaches aside, any reasonable person would consider what she did to be both highly stupid and potentially dangerous. It’s also most likely a criminal act - endangering a train and obstructing a carriage or engine are both possible offences (IIRC...

    Feet on seats

Something I’ve noticed is how prevalent aggressive begging has become over the last few years, with beggars often swearing or threatening when ignored or politely refused.

Hunt for woman who 'burst into train driver's cabin to complain about delays'

If a driver hears banging on their door they would have to be stark raving mad to open it, especially if the train is in motion! It is not the job of a train driver to referee drunken arguments and make judgements about who is or isn’t a nutter. It’s true that passengers have no refuge, a fact...

    Feet on seats

Lee Pomeroy was in the right. Where is he now? On the contrary, this is an online discussion forum. By posting your views on here it is reasonable to assume you are happy to discuss them! If you want to go about ordering total strangers around and chastising them for behaviour that doesn’t...

    Feet on seats

They don’t have to justify themselves to you at all, you have absolutely no authority over them. Honestly? In the middle of a knife crime epidemic, this is your approach?! Incorrect. There is a good reason why enforcement officers wear stab vests and travel in groups. As I pointed out...

    Feet on seats

We have “Railway Enforcement Officers”, who, while better than nothing, are a mixed bag in some respects. For one thing they aren’t deployed properly. The “hot spots” on the DOO part of our network are where they are most needed, but they tend to remain clustered around the major stations...

Braking issue on Caledonian Sleeper causes train to "run away" at Edinburgh

It’s most likely one of many inputs that will flag a generic “brake fault”, rather than something that can actively viewed through the MITRAC menus.

    Feet on seats

I think this is one of those minor issues that winds people on this forum up disproportionately. For me it is lower down the list of annoying behaviours than music played on loud speaker, smelly food, litter etc. If there’s visible mud or excrement on the shoes I agree, but otherwise I’m not...

    Cycle spaces on trains

But those are all variations on the same theme - bike to the station, train into town, then your own bike/hired bike/other public transport. I don’t see why you think that suggestion encourages driving. It certainly wouldn’t in the London area, where virtually nobody who works centrally could...

    Cycle spaces on trains

Why? It strikes me as the perfect solution. Bike to/from the station and either tube in London or Boris bike. Lots of London commuter stations already have bike storage. If anything improving that will be a lot easier (and cheaper) than increasing onboard cycle space.
