Content for news already is driven by the website content. The first four paragraphs of any news story on the website form the red button version of a story.

    Driving with Cab Signalling

No. The issue there is management. Management always think vast and complex software systems are easy and expect too much to be delivered too quickly. Usually time or cost pressures add into this. Software Engineers are only to blame if they didn't speak up and bring down expectations.

We need High speed Rail, but Is HS2 really Needed?

Haven't they said that unlike HS1, freight won't be going anywhere near HS2 as it's a wholly passenger railway?

Virgin Trains East Coast franchise to end 24 June 2018 and is temporarily re-nationalised

Changing a font is never really simple though. All typefaces have different widths, so if they changed font, they could end up with some bits of text which they expected to take up one line in a browser, suddenly taking up two. This would be a problem if there are any bits of the website where...

    Crewe Hub

If you take a look at hitachi's drawings for HS2 stock, judging by the way it curves in at the bottom of the doors, you might just be right about designing around the UK gauge...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

I'm not a destructive test engineer or anything - but trains don't just move around at 36kph and only crash into relatively light (compared to what they could face - a Lorry at a level crossing or God forbid another train). By the way, they teach you about crashes as part of forces and...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

I wouldn't say the test they did was acceptable - if you look at the pictures, the tank of water moved away from the train, while at the same time the train must have stopped almost immediately. If they'd used a solid object which wouldn't take the momentum of the train (I've a great big...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Yes. They crashed it into a 3ton tank of water - albeit only at 36kmh. It was certainly dinted but not smashed to pieces. Mind you I'm not sure I trust their crash test given it was only carried out at 22mph. See here

    Bridge Strikes

The signs would not be wrong - whenever a sign on the road seems to underestimate the height of the bridge, that's because it isn't telling you how high the bridge is - it's telling you the maximum height that your vehicle could be in order to not have a chance of striking the bridge. If the...

Tyne & Wear Metro future type of electrification options

Since the Metro 2030 document was published, Nexus have released a document about rolling stock replacement which makes no mention of street-running or trams at all. See here - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=124860588&postcount=4588 As a result of this, 25Kv/1500V is looking...
