How long can i be held on a train?

There have been a couple cases in Japan where passengers have been held in shinkansen trains overnight - some of the reporting even referred to such cases as "hotels on tracks" - before either being evacuated or the train moving so that might give an idea of the upper limit. I doubt UK railways...

    Conscription.

Bringing stores back to the carrier isn't just a problem for S/VTOL aircraft, though it is more of an issue for them than conventional aircraft. The F-14A for example could in theory carry six AIM-54 Phoenix missiles (a very large weapon) but I believe this wasn't done too often in practice...

National or regional rail passes abroad?

The Japan Rail Pass, which offers travel on many Japan Railways services throughout Japan, as well as some other JR-operated transport modes like ferries. The fastest "Nozomi" services (in other regions of Japan, these services have different names) are usually excluded without paying an...

Disruption from flooding after rain on 4 January 2024

On the West of England for SWR, no service today between Yeovil Junction and Exeter due to the land slip at Crewkerne, that may well be the case for a while (as in, days) until its cleared up.

Weds 27th December - adverse weather to affect some SWR services.

Not ideal, as the West of England line is going to be affected and as Paddington is closed and the date there were probably going to be quite a few using that route. https://www.southwesternrailway.com/plan-my-journey 1703657521 Update: overnight, due to a slight improvement in the forecast...

Landslip at Crewkerne Tunnel - West of England Line closed.

Yes, and that may be the only one today. The GWR Barnstaple to Axminster (2L92) might be the only other one.

Landslip at Crewkerne Tunnel - West of England Line closed.

Please don't take the times in RTT as any kind of official schedule, note that its showing the leaf clearance as operating which would be a quite a feat at present to say the least. SWR official line is "Do Not Travel" between Yeovil and Exeter. From what I've been hearing its highly likely the...

Landslip at Crewkerne Tunnel - West of England Line closed.

Yeovil to Exeter will now not be open until at least Wednesday 13th December, strong winds have prevented work progressing as fast as expected.

Are incidents involving OLE just as common abroad as they are in the UK?

There was an incident a few years back on, IIRC, the Yamanote line in Tokyo where a pole holding up OLE wires fell over due to corrison caused by salt water having been blown in by a typhoon (at least, that was what was reported in Japanese English-language media at the time).

Aslef strikes and OT ban called…

Its going to be worse than that, unfortunately, as there will also be no SWR service in either direction between Exeter and Yeovil and no onward transport between those stations on Sunday 3rd December: https://www.southwesternrailway.com/plan-my-journey/industrial-action

    Signalling Codes

I've seen "COW" a couple of times, which obviously indicates an animal on or near the line, and on one occasion I've seen "OOF" - no, I don't know either, but I hope the poor train was okay!

    1Q18 (NMT) Reading Triangle-Paignton 20/10/23

The "flying banana" developed a fault on Thursday 19th October at Exeter Central and instead of heading back up the WoE line as usual I understand went back via Bristol, possibly related?

Japan train planner - alternatives to HyperDia?

Okay, I'll have to give the app and website a try and see what happens. Thanks, its nice to have some feedback from someone who has used the service!

Japan Rail Pass - large increase in prices from October.

You're welcome, yes, it was a bit of a shock just how ln increase it is!

Japan Rail Pass - large increase in prices from October.

For those of you like myself who have been fortunate enough to visit Japan, you probably took advantage of the "Japan Rail Pass", which offered a certain period of use (up to 21 days) on Japan Railway services and which was a real bargain. Sadly, from October, the price of the Pass is going up...

Japan train planner - alternatives to HyperDia?

Thanks, I'll have to give that a try! I remember the "NaviTime" rally driver man adverts from my earliest visits to Japan, and the same guy was still on them as of my last trip about five years ago. I wonder if hes still the face of "NaviTime"...?! 1694538707 Looking at reviews of the app on...

Japan train planner - alternatives to HyperDia?

I'm going to be able to get to Japan again next year, and on my previous trips I used to use the "HyperDia" website to look up train times, which was incredibly useful for trip planning. However, as of last year, the service now only shows average train times, not specific service details, which...

    Warrington to Honiton

There was a landslip at Honiton tunnel earlier this morning (21st November). The latest information is that the line between Honiton and Axminster will remain closed until at least early afternoon on the 22nd November. Currently the closest you can get to Honiton is Axminster; because of the...

Things the younger generation wouldn’t believe when you were a kid

I used to joke with a younger colleague that the difference between my generation and theirs is that it used to be that you bought a house and rented a T.V, but now its the other way round... :)

SWR closing down newest ticket machines?

There have been a number of factors but one of them has been the rise in use of e-tickets, which means the machines have been used less, combined with the impact of Covid-19 and I guess someone has looked at the financial aspect of what they're taking compared to what they're likely to cost to...
