On Train & Railway Station Announcements

I suspect that the lady was Ellie, widow of the late Phil Sayers who sadly passed away last year. Following his DJ days Phil also became a leading and easily identifiable 'voiceover'. Somewhere on YouTube you can find a clip of the two of them in their kitchen discussing day to day matters (like...

Does London need more express services on major routes?

Not quite the same thing, but the 132 'runs fast' from Greenwich Millennium Park to Eltham, using the Blackwall Tunnel approach roads and missing out East Greenwich, Westcombe Park and Blackheath Royal Standard.

Intercity hotels with free train travel

I haven't been to the Isle of Wight for some time, but most hotels on the Island offered free Island travel cards when I was there.

Your bits of totally useless geographical trivia please...

I sympathise with the guy that thought Wisbech was a seaside resort. As a small schoolboy in East Devon, but home being in Somerset, I got full marks for naming 'three major ports' as London, Southampton and Langport. Oh that GCSEs had been that easy.

    Bratislava to Vienna

Was in Bratislava about 5 years ago, and there was a fast catamaran ferry between the cities. One way on the ferry, return next evening by train was a good outing. Don't know whether it still runs.

Radio Stations: Which one(s) do you listen to?

There are just a few 'favourites' on my iPhone. Five Live for sports commentary, and Radio 4 LW for cricket. Classic fm and the French equivalent 'Radio Classique'. For other music, Heartland Public Radio (HPR1 usually) because I enjoy classic country with absolutely no adverts, and...

Purchasing a meal in Virgin 1st class on a std class ticket

Quite a few Heritage Lines offer this facility.

    Woolwich Ferry

Northbound, that would mean that all hazardous loads would have to cross by Tower Bridge or another central London crossing. (Southbound they can use the QE Bridge, but not the northbound tunnels at Dartford, Blackwall or Rotherhithe.

Turnaround of loco-hauled services at termini

Going back to the comment that a pilot loco was required to collect a slip coach off the 'through' road of a station, at Westbury, the loco had to go out to the main line to collect the coach from Heywood Road, as the expresses took the avoiding line.

Castle Cary: usage down, interchange up (dramatically)

Quote: It's also interesting because yesterday (09/01/17), your Exeter-PAD train was about 18 late. Instead of allowing the Weymouth -Bristol to go forward (and, I'd guess, allow the PAD train to overtake it at Frome), they held it until after the express had gone. This made the local 15 late...

    SNCF Loco hauled

just catching up - belatedly - on this thread. Mention was made of Paris - Cherbourg which services sports a selection of power units. However, contracts have now been exchanged for the Region to acquire double deck units to replace the loco hauled stock, so time is running out.

TRIVIA - Non-terminal stations where every passenger train stops

Yes - that confused me, too. So - I resubmit Frome!!! Westbury I exclude because from time to time there have been Southern services that were fast from Warminster to Trowbridge. I am not sure of the current situation. Regular peak trains on the Bexleyheath line from CX pass Lewisham non...

    Kent Freight Routings

That is the 'temporary' bridge that was put in after the st Johns disaster 60 odd years ago. So it has lasted pretty well

How can i view train timetables for other counties online?

The SNCF one is interesting. How do you find the 'home' page? I seem to get messages about not being authorised to access the file if I search for anything other than the extract you have given. I am interested in the lines from St Lazare to Cherbourg and Le Havre. Thanks

    New Thames Crossings

Two points come to mind. The ferry is not really deemed to be an alternative to the tunnel(s) but is a necessary alternative for hazardous loads. A pedestrian bridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf would need to be of substantial height or include a complex opening mechanism if the quite...

    Breakfast in Warsaw Centralna

I haven't been for some years, but the Hotel Jan Sobieski is a fine old building and a quality, busy hotel opposite the railway station. I seem to remember a colleague telling me that it was now managed by Radisson. But, whilst there may not be a view, it is, in my view, better and has so much...

    Seeing People Only Once

I took my Mother in Law to the cemetary to tend her husband's grave. She kept stopping in front of stones saying "Old so and so - didn't know she was dead". It was very quiet but we did see one old lady coming toward us. As she approached Mother in Law exclaimed "Molly!! I thought you were dead...
