Single station with widest variety of TOCs?

I'd go for Crewe. SR do have a scheduled stop there with the sleepers - both north and southbound. There a few XC each day - presumably for route knowledge via Wilmslow as an alternative to via Stoke NR, VT, LM, EM, AW are all regulars Rgds 45378

    Freightliner HH on WCML

Travelling south on LM today betwen Kidsgrove and Rugeley, we overtook a FHH loaded coal train just North of Stafford. It subsequently ran through Rugeley TV on the main line up slow. Does anyone know the origin / destination of this movement ?- presumably either Liverpool or Ellesmere Port as...

    What station is this?

Nothing to do with the original question, but in BR days with conventional loco-hauled rolling stock with facing/back to engine reservations, the West Country - Scotland axis could cause havoc with reversals at Gloucester, Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh Waverley. Punters routinely turned...

    Wolverhampton Problems.

I was travelling mid-afternoon Liverpool Lime Street - Crewe today, so not directly impacted by the fire, but - perhaps inevitably - caught up by some of the consequences... A few comments: 1. Both at Lime Street and Crewe the screens showed pictures of the fire - which helped convince...

    Timber @ Ribblehead

A lot of timber being stacked in the yard. Does anyone know where it's coming from / going to / when & how it's being moved ? Rgds 45378

    Virgin, no window

What everyone seems to have missed is the question of which idiot designed these interiors - and it doesn't matter whether it's a pendo, a Voyager, a 170, a 175, or whatever - so badly. In fairness Siemens, with classes 185 and 350 has tried reasonably hard. But the others, well, they've...

Liverpool Central - Hunts Cross temp closure

Does anyone know the scope of work that's going on during this blockade? Apologies if it's been discussed already; I haven't been on the site for awhile, and I've only skimmed recent posts. Rgds 45378

    Carstairs Junction

The true horror is being stuck on a diesel Super Voyager for a journey entirely under the wires from Edinburgh (or Glasgow) to Birmingham - approx 300 miles. I despair of the logic behind Netwrk Rail's electrification plans in NW England if there isn't an associated push on the TOCs and the...

    Chester signboard controversy

A recent trip up the ECML from York to Edinburgh produced a fair crop of such signs on the east side- mileage to London / Edinburgh, halfway points, sign at the northern end of the Ferryhill loop etc... Returning via the WCML produced signs at Quintinshill (site of worst UK rail disaster) and...

Coal trains on Warrington - Frodsham line

I've recently seen a couple of coal trains on this line - from a distance - think they were operated by Freighliner HH. Does anybody know their origin / destination / frequency? Rgds 45378

Omega like clamps on bullhead rail

Apols for delay in getting back to you - the temp repair theory is the most promising. Sorry I haven't got a photo. Cheers 45378

Omega like clamps on bullhead rail

Sorry, didn't make myself clear - the clamps are fitted to the vertical web of the rail, and are bolted through horizontally - so a bit like a fishplate, but not at a rail joint. rgds 45378

Omega like clamps on bullhead rail

Whiling away a few idle minutes at Crewe recently, I noticed several sections of bullhead rail where what I can only describe as omega-shaped clamps (in plan) had been fixed to the web of the rail. Anybody know what purpose they serve? Rgds 45378

Rear Ended 159 at Exeter and some sunny 67s

Glad to see no injuries but a pity that the Pacer fleet wasn't reduced. Are we going to be stuck with these dreadful things forever..... Rgds 45378

    Policing the 'quiet coach'.

It looks as though Virgin staff have been given a reminder to enforce quiet coaches - last couple of trips on WCML have seen 'supportive interviews' given by them to miscreants. Rgds 45378

whats new on the heart of wales

Having travelled Shrewsbury - Llandrindod Wells last week (for work!) and in an ideal world wanting to go onto Llanelli/Swansea (for London) but being frustrated by the temporary closure, I offer the following..... A conversation with the guard as I returned Llandrindod Wells - Shrewsbury (as...
