Which TOC's have the Smartest Uniform?

Ties (and decorative scarves) are surely some of the most pointless things Homo sapiens have ever invented. If I never again have to wear a totally useless piece of patterened cloth around my neck I shall be well pleased. By all means give people the choice if they really feel they need to get...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

'Wrong line working' isn't any sort of official railway term as far as I know. Whereas 'Wrong direction move' is. 'Wrong direction move(ment)' describes any movement for which a signal is not provided.

Propelling/ Driving from other than a leading cab.

^ No it isn't. This is the Rule Book's current definition of propelling - Propelling Pushing vehicles by a traction unit. This does not include push-pull trains. 1649088593 Actually, thinking about it, that definition makes it clear why driving from "other than the leading cab" of a multiple...

Propelling/ Driving from other than a leading cab.

The Rule Book used to have a clear definition of what constituted propelling but I think it was removed some time ago. I don't have it to hand to check. Based on what it used to say my understanding is that "propelling" and "driving from other than the leading cab" are different things. The...

Manchester & North West Transformation Programme

Dalton in the down direction is single door only for 195s using the leading set of doors in the rear carriage. There may occasionally be some exceptional circumstance that requires all doors to be opened but the correct method of work is single door only. All doors can be used in either...

TOCs with Sundays in Working Week (Drivers / Guards)

Except for ex TPE drivers who were transferred to Northern in 2016 and are still on their TPE terms and conditions. Their Sundays are inside the working week as are any new starters who join the ex TPE links.

    Pilot working on single lines

Interesting how things vary across the network. Carrying the forms is mandated at my TOC. There is only one location on the routes I sign where Modified Working is permitted. It's a one train working line without train staff. The controlling signalbox is about 30 miles away. There is nowhere...

    Pilot working on single lines

Yes, "Working by Pilotman" will generally need to be introduced, although there are certain exceptions. As already mentioned, "Modified Working" may be introduced where permissable. This allows one train to proceed on the authority of a form either provided by the signaller or dictated over the...

How much or how little snow is enough to require additional RBTs and other company instructions

Yes, TOC / traction specific. On class 195 / 331 the snow brake continuously cycles the brakes throughout the train as mentioned above. I wasn't aware that some units apparently have a "snow brake" that functions differently.

How much or how little snow is enough to require additional RBTs and other company instructions

Some more recent traction units have a snow brake which does away with the need for additional running brake tests during snow conditions. The driver just has to go to the relevant screen on the train management system and press a button to engage it. Once engaged there is no requirement to...

    UK face coverings discussion

Interestingly, the Scottish Government regulations have the following to say on the subject of refusing exempt people access to services. Both the English and Welsh regulations seem to be silent on the subject. "Those exempt under the guidance and regulations do not have to prove their...

Class 195 and Cumbrian Coast Line Loading Gauge compatibility

Class 195s are currently permitted to work between Barrow and Maryport, but not between Maryport and Carlisle, the same as class 150s. I believe 195s have worked passenger services between Barrow and Millom but do not know if they have been any further.

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

Yes guards can log faults and problems. Most of the guards I work with are very conscientious and will either tell the driver about any issues or will report it themselves to our maintenance controllers. It is obviously easiest for passengers to talk to the guard but there is no problem with...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

I have seen plenty of discussion about the issue on this forum. I haven't however actually witnessed it happening either at Oxford Road or anywhere else, despite usually keeping a close eye on the cab monitors when stopped at stations, nor has anyone ever reported such an issue to me.

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

Well, I work as a driver at one of the first depots to have received these units. I've worked them through Oxford Road pretty much every day since their introduction. At no time has anybody, staff or passengers, reported such incidents to me. Unless people do so, I can't really get them...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

If people are witnessing things that shouldn't be happening with these trains, can you please tell a member of staff about it. Admittedly you might get a disappointingly apathetic response from some staff members, but if you happen to tell me I can guarantee that I will at least make an entry in...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

^ No it doesn't. Staff do not input "the route" to the system. Issues such as not knowing which side platforms are on, or incorrectly announcing short platforms, are due to the relatively simple way the system works and/or programming. These are not things that train crew have any control over.

How do Northern's CAF units know which side the platform is on?

Deleted. LLama's post already explains it.

Sorry, sharing a picture of a key designed to access a secure space would not be appropriate.

Arriva Rail Northern to be stripped of franchise

Just to respond to people who keep mentioning two sets of drivers on different T & Cs, there are of course three sets of drivers on different T & Cs. The ex TPE drivers on the west side, who seem to get forgotten about by almost everyone, already have Sundays as part of their working week.
