Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

I think the bridge was shortened quite a while before the multi storey car park was built. The multi storey was only built in 2009 but I remember snaking round the path at the side of the car park to reach the bridge when I was a lad back in the 80s and early 90s. Or at least I think I do - I...

Wigan-Bolton electrification. Construction updates only please

This may be of some interest. The bridge has no connection (literal or figurative) to Wigan Central though. King Street was built in the 1860s/70s and Central only opened in 1892.

Connection time at Amsterdam Centraal arriving on Eurostar

When I originally booked the Eurostar my onward plans were different. They still might be so I'm just considering my options. OK thanks. I'm not fussed about a reserved seat so that's not a problem.

Connection time at Amsterdam Centraal arriving on Eurostar

Good to know. Thanks! Thanks for the tip. I assume there is no issue with stopping short on the Eurostar? Technically not allowed but no one is ever going to know?

Connection time at Amsterdam Centraal arriving on Eurostar

I'm booked on the 11.04 Eurostar from St. Pancras on 8th July, arriving Amsterdam at 16.15. I would like to catch the 16.38 from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. Is 23 minutes sufficient connection time? I'm familiar with Amsterdam Centraal so getting from one platform to the other won't be a problem...

    Staff Vaping

Yes, I see this regularly at many airports.

    Trenitalia Break Of Journey

The Circumetnea web site seems to suggest that break is permitted: https://www.circumetnea.it/biglietti-extraurbani/ Unless I've misunderstood what it is saying. When I was on it in July last year I had to change at Randazzo in order to complete the full "circuit" (Catania Borgo to Riposto)...

    Trams versus The Railways

This is still a rule in Melbourne, where the tram network is kind of comparable to the ones the UK used to have. You aren't allowed to overtake a stopped tram until its doors are closed and the road is clear of pedestrians.

Woman Gets £480 Bill For Putting Feet On Seats.

I remember that there used to be very small signs just below the window on Pacers which simply said "Please do not put your feet on the seats". The reason I remember this is because I once saw one where some wag had tried to deface the sign by replacing one word with another, but had crossed...

    Wasn't aware of that. Thanks

    InterRail + outbound/inbound journeys

Thank you all for your comments. Reassuring. This is a good point which hadn't crossed my mind! My intended dates are 10th - 19th July, so coming back from Paris a week before the Olympics start. Hopefully in that direction it will be OK, but I will make sure to keep an eye on availability and...

    InterRail + outbound/inbound journeys

I'm planning a trip in summer using an InterRail Global pass (4 days in one month). As I understand it this gives me one free outbound and one free inbound journey from/to the UK. My plan is to travel from Wigan to Euston with Avanti, and then take the Eurostar from St. Pancras to Amsterdam...

Shortest UK car number plate you've seen

Steve Parrish used to own PEN15 : https://twitter.com/Stavros6/status/1248226078654705664 In the new style registrations, PO is, or certainly was, issued for the Preston area. There were quite a few PO02 cars knocking about round here at one time.

The Easyjet "Piggy in the Middle" Lottery

I once had a middle seat, with a woman in the window and her (late teenage/young adult) son in the aisle. I offered to swap with one of them and they both turned me down flat. Then they proceeded to have a conversation with each other, across me, for the duration of the flight. Go figure.

Frighton (Brighton given a spooky temporary name by GTR)

I was born in the UK, have lived here all my life and am (of course) a native English speaker. Neither am I disabled or have learning difficulties, but if I saw "Chillingshurst" on a departure board I wouldn't think "Oh that must be Billingshurst"; I'd think it was a different place. Unless I...

"We Played a 72 Hour Game of Tag Across Europe (Again)"

To be fair to them they only made that mistake once (I think) early on - when they were actually in Strasbourg they knew they weren't yet in Germany. I'd never heard of this series before but I've watched the first two episodes now and really like it.

    DFDS Amsterdam to Newcastle

Probably because they don't have reclining seat lounges (like Brittany Ferries do) and they don't want loads of people dossing in sleeping bags in the public areas.

50P to use the toilets at Glasgow Queen Street

I remember being slung out of a restaurant in Florence after trying to nip in to use the toilet, having been sitting with a couple of friends at a beer & watermelon wagon in the nearby square. Still in Italy but back onto the topic of stations, I paid €1 at Caserta station this week to use the...

    Stansted Airport fines

This is (or certainly was) indeed possible. I once boarded an RER train in central Paris using a T+ ticket bearing the symbol "RER dans Paris", alighting at Torcy which - unbeknown to me at the time - is not "dans Paris" but is out in the sticks in Zone 5. I put the ticket into the turnstile...
