    Sheffield signalling query

It's useful to have a train waiting at a signal out of the station, as it can move as soon as it gets the signal. If it waits in the station, once it gets the signal it has to go through the dispatch procedure, causing additional delay.

Confirmed : HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped and replaced with other projects.

Presumably, Sunak wanted some good news alongside the cancellation of HS2 phase 2, so brought in Andrew Gilligan and his crayon.

    A career as a signaller

No, they won't make any sense to you now.

    A career as a signaller

You could start straight at block school or have some time doing other things first; it varies. It could be a while. If your contract is for a box then that's where you'll be, unless you're on the relief. Block school location is decided on both availability and distance. That is where your...

    A career as a signaller

Not available means the person has declined overtime for that day.

Lumo overspeed incident at Peterborough (17/04/2022)

This also reminds me of Ladbroke Grove. As well as the poor training of a new driver, in both incidents the driver believed the signal was showing a different indication, even though the signal indications were visible for a significant length of time after forming this belief.

    "Emergency Bell tested, faulty"

This is not uncommon. As mentioned above, note it, fault it, telephone for emergencies and mention it to your relief.

Delay attribution when signallers put fast behind stopper

Suggested or requested maybe, but signallers are responsible for regulation. If the signaller could show that their decision minimised overall delay, or otherwise followed the regulating policy, they wouldn't get the delay.

Overuse of "Waiting at Signal" button?

I'm intrigued as well. Anything that needs it gets signal protection. Forgetting to speak to a driver results in a delay at worst.

Use of the GSM-R by signallers/control to contact drivers

Many signallers are wary of using berth triggered broadcasts as there is no way of ensuring that the driver has correctly understood the message. They may acknowledge the broadcast, but believe they heard something different to what the signaller intended. With conventional communication, this...

RMT Extends Strike Action on Network Rail to Dec 24-27

'Fire and rehire', although they'd be daft to do that; most railway staff are either able to retire now or have a previous career or qualification to fall back on.

Well, 'over 100 trains' is correct! During the day, in an hour there is, or should be, in each direction: Liverpool-Newcastle TPE Manchester-Redcar TPE South West-Scotland XC Leeds-York Northern Blackpool-York Northern Hull-York Northern Approx one freight plus the occasional...

South ECML ARS after re-control from King's Cross PSB to York ROC

Kings Cross PSB was a power box, and so did not have ARS (the Moorgate branch had some kind of automatic working though) and the workstations covering the area described above do not have ARS.

    A career as a signaller

It's not. Pensionable pay increases are limited to RPI, and upon promotion, a pension restructuring premium is created for the difference, starting from that date. Essentially it's a career average scheme.

    A career as a signaller

That may be the received wisdom but it's worth considering carefully, at least between CARE and RPS65. They are both career average schemes, and either can give a higher retirement benefit depending on your pay rises, CPI and RPI inflation. Ideally you'd speak to a financial advisor.

    New drivers & incident rates

I can think of three reasons: They are only allowed for certain situations They are a lot of work to set up Receiving 'acknowledged' is hardly a guarantee of a clear understanding!

Disruption at Hereford 21 May due to shortage of signallers (again)

Nothing has changed in that regard. The Rule Book explicitly allows signallers to work on points themselves. A Safe System of Work is not required for that. Non-passenger trains don't need mechanical facing points to be clipped. The only difference now is that signallers aren't usually shown...
