You've definitely thought this through, and I'm semi-convinced by it, but I unfortunately don't believe that the sort of organisation and co-ordination to get this sort of thing running reliably and smoothly exists currently :/

Is it, though? An off-peak fare from Kings Cross to Edinburgh on LNER is still the same no matter what you call the train, and they're hardly struggling to sell them. If there are particularly under-used services then reduce the price to a point that people find acceptable to persuade them onto...

I really don't get the idea of bringing back (or increasing the number of) named trains at all. For all the talk on here about confusing information on departure boards/announcements and how the railway needs to be clearer, there certainly seems a lot of support for adding extra irrelevant...
