    GWR Class 800

HST is generally around 7 minutes to get to 125mph. Fastest I've managed on a class 800 is 3m 30 to 125mph. Haven't had the chance yet to do 0-125 on a class 802 as they are slightly quicker.

    HST Brakes

You don't have to, but by placing the brake into emergency you are only charging the main res. Any other position you will be charging the main res and the brake pipe so it takes longer. Should there be a problem with the brake pipe you will have 7+ bar of air escaping through the leak making it...

    GWR Class 800

The 80X may have superior braking but unfortunately the infrastructure will not allow drivers to make the most of it.TPWS and ATP will intervene. It's just a case of knowing where and when you can use the superior brakes. Didcot and Chippenham spring to mind as 2 potential stations if the...

GWR Turbo cascade progress to Bristol region services

To me it shows just how detached the dft are from the real world. Sure it makes good PR that the train has more seats. Unfortunately, the reality is that people don't sit in the middle of the 3 seats as it's too cosy with the people either side so they prefer to stand, therefore there is no...

    Great Western Electrification Progress

Platform 1 at Paddington was electrified on Sun17/7. Royal Oak sidings is having the track lowered under the bridge presumably ready for OHLE. No idea when platform 2 is being done but shouldn't be long as they're working in the area. Sent from my SM-T535 using Tapatalk

GWR operating short 'HSTGTi' sets (see diagrams section for workings)

GTi is from the motoring term used on the VW Golf. You have a normal Golf and the faster, sportier Golf GTi. The 2+4 and 2+5 HSTs will just be faster HSTs as less weight to lug around. I believe GTi actually stands for Grand Tourer injection. It's just a nickname the short sets have been given...

Goring Gap/AONBs and Electrification of the GWML

Personally I think NR will say no money or too expensive to replace the OHLE at Goring. The best they can hope for is to paint the structures green! Sent from my SM-T535 using Tapatalk

    Great Western Electrification Progress

I think the official date for Padd to Reading is Dec 2017 however I believe they are aiming for May 2017. From what I've seen so far, considering the amount of work they're doing every night it's certainly possible for a May switch on.

    Mileages around Frome

At the West end of Castle Cary station there are 2 mileposts almost at the same point. One on the Up Athenley with 115mp ( from PAD via NBY ) and on the route to Yeovil with 129mp ( from PAD via Melksham ).

    Pantograph Mechanism

Most pantographs are air operated. There is an auxiliary compressor which runs off the batteries. When the train is dead the aux compressor runs to pressurise the pan system. Once it's up to pressure it shuts off ( I think about 3 bar). Then the driver can then raise the pan by the pan up...

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

I can't see that a 185 is more expensive to run than 2 HST power cars, not that I want the HSTs to go. The only part of the Devon / Cornwall with the differential speed would be Largin viaduct 40/55MU and that's only half a mile!

Class 185s and their braking system

As far as I'm aware it was the hoses weren't up to the job on the 180s. The pressures created lead to the hydraulic hoses bursting and depositing their fluid onto the tracks causing a bit of a mess. The system was pretty good when operating. No idea why the issue hasn't / couldn't be cured though.
