Took a train west of Swansea for the first time today

I've only ever been west of Swansea (indeed, west of Cardiff!) once, which was in summer last year, when I took a trip of FGW's summer-only once a week 'Pembroke Coast Express' from Paddington. It was a great run - one of the best I've had in the UK - with the HST flying down to Cardiff, then...

    Man Assaulted at Locomotion Shildon.

Hehe :) It's very tempting when people can be so obnoxious. I've found that I enjoy these busy events a lot more now that I've given up trying to get photos - as others have said above, there's an unpleasant minority of photographers that make the whole experience rather unpleasant, so I now...

    Heated Front Windscreen

Our 1999 Jag XJ has it, and while we haven't had much cause to use it this winter, it can be very useful at times - you can just about see the lines, but only if you're trying to notice them. It makes warming up the car in cold weather a much quicker process.

    Eurostar Food

My most recent journey in Standard Premier (early in January) hit a new low for me - it was a breakfast service, and the 'breakfast' provided amounted to a small yoghurt, a mini croissant, and a mini bread roll. Extremely unimpressive.

    Which newspaper do you read?

I tend to read The Guardian, when I buy a newspaper at all. It also offers - in my opinion - the best online experience of any of the major papers (its crosswords section is particularly good :) ).

    British Motor Show

One - admittedly smaller - alternative to the Motor Show is the Canary Wharf Motorexpo, which can be quite good fun, and runs every year. It's free to enter (the majority of stands are dotted around public spaces in the vicinity of Canada Square) and they usually have a fair selection of cars...

First Great Western "1st Class as Standard"

I very much hope the latter - while I use standard class most of the time on FGW when I do use first it's generally quite well-filled (excepting Cotswold line HSTs). What, I wonder, would this mean for the Pullman Dining services, which FGW have only recently revamped - if HSTs only have 1...

FGW coffee service takes a downward lurch

At my local Waitrose, there's never much of a queue at the machine by the reception desk, but the café has been noticeably busier since the free tea/coffee offer was introduced - perhaps this works out quite well for Waitrose though, as at the café people are likely to buy a snack of some sort...

    Leather Seats On Trains

I seem to remember reading some explanation of how leather is produced which explained that lower-quality leather (such as that used in most cars and - by extension - trains and buses) is passed through a kind of leather grain pattern press in order to conceal imperfections, so perhaps this is...

FGW coffee service takes a downward lurch

Indeed. The buffet car menu on their website would suggest this to be the case. Perhaps the machine was broken on this particular journey?

Graham Norton Reprimanded for Wearing Charity Badge on Show

I'm curious as to how you draw the conclusion from the above link that the BBC displays a 'liberal/left-wing culture'. As I see it, the BBC takes 119,444 copies of overtly 'right-wing' newspapers (I've included the Express, the Mail, and the Telegraph in this calculation - many would argue the...

Wonderful - and hugely varied - photos. Thankyou for sharing them. :)

    Coach market share

It's quite a tricky question to answer - the trains vary a lot in length over the course of the day. At their shortest, they could be 3-car 165s/166s, but could equally be worked in multiple with another 3-car (or a 2-car), making a 5 or 6 coach train. Equally, a number of services are operated...

Video: The Capital Streak, 4464 Bittern, 7th December 2013.

Great videos, though a little disappointing to see it pottering up the slow at Arlesey...not like the northbound run through there earlier this year! :)

    Yorkshire people

Quite, and justifiably rather than 'overly' proud of their beautiful and historic region of the country...I love visiting Yorkshire. :)

    Is a Steam ban 'Inevitable'?

I think the notion of a blanket 'steam ban' on the main line is extremely unlikely in the medium, even the medium-long term. It's worth looking at Network Rail management's approach to steam on the main line in relation to that of its predecessor(s) in British Rail. When you do this, you see...

If you had £10 million to spend

This. Either that or I would buy up one of the Bulleid Merchant Navy class locos currently languishing in ex-Barry condition and restore it as an unrebuilt example of the class.

I haven't changed mine since I got the computer last year - I'm very fond of the view:

It was a football special heading from Kings Cross to Newcastle for Chelsea fans, apparently.
