Amtrak just ordered new trains for the northeast. Doubt that will be cut anytime soon.

When was your first railway journey alone?

2015, I think, at age 19 Moved away from London at age 10 to a place without trains. Was visiting a city and got a train to a football match by myself. Didn't realize it until now...

I don't think I understand your use of bins. Could you elaborate for me?

New Jersey: Train crashes into station

I meant to write bulky or clunky, particularly to describe the locomotive itself. Must have been a bit flustered after having to watch endless reports on CNN, where they show a video of the train at 8:05 and say look at it speeding "just before impact" even though a full 40 would still pass.

New Jersey: Train crashes into station

Keep in mind that a very large number of overall commuter rail lines in the U.S., including a brand new one in Florida opening soon, still use loco-hauled stock and are very brazen trains. the reports have dropped from 4 back down to one deceased. Thoughts are with that family

    Thameslink/ Class 700 Progress

For anyone saying laptops should be in your lap, I'd advise you to google the dangers of such a practice. I'm not sure what to believe, but there's a fair number of articles about long-term issues caused by that, which is a why the term "notebook" started to pick up as a replacement. Of course...

New Jersey: Train crashes into station

It looks like more damage was done to the station than the train. Hopefully no major injuries. It does strike me as odd that in all of the photos and videos posted to Twitter people are just milling around. If the roof is partially collapsed, I'd expect everyone to be evacuated from the station...

    Thameslink/ Class 700 Progress

After seeing the photo of legroom, it's exactly like this coach I'm on, which doesn't have armrests as I travel across the US.

    Raised platforms at Euston

Biggest thing that bugs me about the railway today is the Lack of level access for trains. Not just for wheelchairs, but to reduce the safety issues of the step/gap (I've expressed my discontent at London Bridge rebuilt still having a step and a gap). These level bits are the same across each...

    Class 345 progress

If in sections between doors in a car that have the transverse seating, changing the four longitudinal each side of the transverse to just transverse only adds 48 seats by my count, whereby hugely decreasing the standing room by the doors in the central cars. As has been stated, an S Stock...

    Bus Driver Rage!!

The busses here in my us college town have a pull cord, which will only make a "bell" once and not until the doors are closed. A lot of people will try to pull the cord before the bus closes the door at the stop prior, which means the system resets it. However the long announcement after the...

Southern Rail send the 'wrong type of train'

Love the stock picture of a diesel train in the article. I'd expect the driver to have to check his train before it leaves the depot. Although I'm sure having a pantograph might not be something you might be concerned about if you've been working the railway for a while

    Favorite and least favorite livery

Favorites: 1) Grand Central - reminds me of GNER and looks pleasant 2) London Midland - modern and unique. Isn't the usual copycat livery 3) London Underground - can't mess with a classic, which has been copied a lot. Shame that Crossrail trains won't follow the standard TfL look. Least...

Cheers for a detailed explanation on IEP vs AT300. It's nice when the more knowledgeable members are happy to teach those of us with a bucket we're hoping to fill. Of course some people have a lid on there bucket. Where was I? Oh yes, thanks for answering my post. Since this forum doesn't...

Virgin Trains East Coast price rise and changes to off peak from September 4th

3pm peak is a joke! I travelled on an off peak return in May and caught the 4:30 to Peterborough. Last week I had to be on the train at 3:30! This'll make day-trips to London from anywhere south of London a little more inconvenienced.

TVM failed to print tickets whose responsibility?

I'd say its really easy to not grab all your tickets. I booked a day trip once to Liverpool via York, which coincidentally was the best path home. For the two of us 11 pieces of paper dropped from the vending machine. Took me about 5 minutes in the booking hall to make sure it was all there.

    Gatwick Airport Station

I visited Gatwick Station the other day, after getting off a plane (a sensible reason to stop by). I had no trouble buying a platform ticket to watch a few new trains stop by, but I did get an odd look from the ticket clerk after forking over my 10p. The staton felt very cramped and cold. Not a...
