    Built environment discussion

Hi everyone! We don't seem to have a thread to talk about architecture - or the general built environment - yet? Well let me do the honours! :) Post anything and everything, from local affairs to national landmarks to international monuments, past, present, and future! To kickstart, I thought...

Broken rail disrupting services between Barnsley and Leeds

I looked on the Northern website today, and saw that due to a broken rail at Wakefield Kirkgate, northbound services from Barnsley to Leeds are not running. There was also something said about 'protracted' lead times for the replacement part...

    'Perfect day' on the railways?

All this talk about the disruption on the railways in terms of staff shortages, strikes, cancellations, and more, has got me wondering if there has ever been a day in the modern history of the railways (so maybe post-privatisation) where there has been no delays, no cancellations, anything of...

    Exploring London - Ticket Advice

Good evening, I am spending a week in London starting from the 2nd August. I would like to devote approximately 3 days to exploring London thoroughly (meaning Zone 1-6), through all modes of public transport (bus, tube, DLR, etc.). I'm also using the public transport out of these days during the...

The 2010s: How would you define it?

Not only is 2019 drawing to a close, but also a decade. A decade, to me, defined by the increased use of the Internet in everyday lives, climate change protests and (odd) politics. Not to mention the decline in terrestrial television (so an increase in streaming platforms) as well a rise in...

Announcements on new/refurbished trains can be too loud, frequent and distracting

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/northern-class-195-construction-introduction-updates.128808/page-110#post-4261002 The voice artists are both dreadful sounding too.

    Thomas Cook Collapses

From yesterday (sorry if already discussed in full): https://news.sky.com/story/thomas-cook-seeks-last-ditch-fire-sale-in-bid-to-avert-collapse-11814043 A big shame to see them in this state. We remember using them last year for a long haul flight, and how cheap they were compared to the...

How would you Rate your Local Station?

How would you rate the station you are most familiar with (meaning, your hometown station, or perhaps the station you most commonly use for work)? My Local: Barnsley Interchange Setting: Situated in the centre of the town. Need I say more? (5/10) Architecture: Looks okay; composed of a red...

Trivia: Longest Time a Rail Unit has served a Diagram?

Hello. I'm just wondering if there are any units that has been stuck on a Diagram for a particular length of time (for example, a 156 unit on a brach line). If so, what are the longest time periods?

    Ugliest Buildings in the UK

What is your ugliest building in the UK, in terms of the architecture? For me, it would be the typical high street buildings in the town centers, with the typical Icelands and Carphone Warehouses occupying them. Very boring and devoid of character. At least Barnsley is redeveloping theirs a...

    Leeds: The forgotten Big City?

A few months ago, I was looking at the tourist side of the Guardian, and all the major cities of the UK were mentioned as a tourist destination. All, apart from Leeds. Yes, I know that Leeds isn't very touristy (unless knife crime attracts you! ;)), but that doesn't mean there's anything there...

New X10 service Barnsley to Leeds

Just found out today that Stagecoach are operating a new limited express service Barnsley to Leeds, using buses fitted with Wi-Fi and Leather seats. Got a few questions: 1) What model buses are they using? 2) Is this the best idea? Arriva operated the 444 Leeds to Barnsley about 10 years ago...

Why are Diesel Trains generally not offered with more than One Engine choice?

Question that came into my head. Buses and aircraft are usually offered by more than one engine choice from different companies (like Volvo and Scania for buses, and GE and Rolls Royce for planes). Why has there been none of that in the rail industry, generally?
