Why are some stations designated as 'request' stops?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/can-services-skip-stations-that-are-drop-off-only-if-no-one-has-a-ticket-to-them.236428/ I have asked on here before what the point of request stops are, and nobody has explained it to me. My local station is a request stop, as is...

    Avanti West Coast feedback?

Hoping someone can help. Perhaps I'm really missing something but I can't find anywhere on the Avanti West Coast website that says how you can leave feedback. I've found forms to claim for things, to complain etc but I don't want to complain, I want to send praise for a truly great member of...

"Misuse" of Anytime Short Return ticket type by Transpennine Express

While looking up fares from Llandudno Junction to Newcastle, returning early in the morning, I was surprised to see only Anytime Short Returns are available, with no Anytime Return. The fare setter is Transpennine Express, and this seems to be the case for every station pair I tried, including...

Valid routes Warrington Bank Quay to Blackpool North

On Sunday 26 June I want to travel from Llandudno Junction to Blackpool North. It seems there are engineering works so the quickest route, changing at Warrington Bank Quay for the WCML isn't offered by journey planners, instead going via Manchester and changing at Oxford Road is suggested...

    Loco turnaround at Llandudno

I was surprised to see that one of today's charter trains to Llandudno wasn't top and tailed - I'd assumed that loco turnaround would either have been removed or long out of service by now. I rarely visit the station these days so may well be wrong, and presumably am, unless the train will be...

Voyagers could be the best current train

Currently on a Voyager, and it strikes me this is the closest I've seen to a great train since I used to commute on CIGs. Perfect window/seat alignment, a toilet at both ends, all tables, luggage space between seats. It's basically a modem mk2. Why do people dislike these? They're fantastic.

Break of Journey on an Anytime Short Return

Is break of journey allowed on an Anytime Short Return on the outbound leg? The specific journey I am thinking of is Warrington Bank Quay to Blackpool North, breaking my journey for about 2 hours at Preston. (I have done this in the past, but on occasions where I was forced to due to cancelled...

Employee rights to socialise while off work due to illness

It was both, I believe. Being off sick doesn't necessarily mean you're bedridden. Edit: A news report on the case: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-57411812 and a HR journal's take: https://www.thehrdirector.com/legal-updates/legal-updates-2021/going-pub-sick-not-sackable-offence/

Trains where they shouldn't have been / weren't route cleared

Inspired by a recent post, what examples do people have of trains ending up in places they shouldn't have, or where they didn't have route clearance for? I'll start it off with one local to me - a class 90 loco which should have been detached at Crewe but made it all the way to Llandudno...

    Do you have a railcard?

Just curious to see what sort of proportion there is. If you have more than one, choose the one you use more, or would ordinarily use.

When did trains last overtake on the North Wales Coast line?

A novel new service on the North Wales Coast line is the 1250ish from Holyhead to Crewe. Stopping only at Bangor, Llandudno Junction and Chester, it arrives at Chester and Crewe before the 1230ish all stations departure from Holyhead. It's timed to arrive at Llandudno Junction just a minute...

    Coronavirus and working from home

For the actual work? Almost certainly. Emails and instant messengers etc use tiny amounts of data. The increase in things like video streaming (Netflix etc) in the daytime would have a bigger effect.

Could the railways handle storm disruption better?

A thread intended for general discussion on how the railways react to storm related disruption and whether improvements could be made. Prompted by discussion following the recent storms in this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/storm-dennis-disruption-15th-16th.200223/

Would 185s be suitable for use with another operator, such as GTR or SWR?

Moderator note: split from 185's 110MPH Upgrade - Practical? I'm like a broken record every time this topic comes up. Just move them to Southern or South Western Railway where there's a use for small fleets of incompatible diesel units, allowing compatible go-anywhere class 171 and/or 159s to...

    "Advance" vs "Advanced"

"Advanced" makes my picky gland twitch a bit, and I've just seen a Heathrow Express banner advert on the site offering "Advanced Fares from 5.00" :(

Prompted by a question in the bus section of the forum, I wondered which daily newspaper people read. (If you don't read one daily, choose the one which you would most often)

Merseyrail launch new on-board entertainment carriage

Disclaimer: video with questionable music taste. It is safe to watch, but does show misuse of a 507/508's wheelchair space... Edit: apologies for including a social media video link with no description. Unfortunately I'm on mobile, so can't convert the video to a more accessible location. It's...
