Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Indeed. In contrast, when you walk out of the departure hall at Hong Kong airport, the Airport Express is right in front of you (taxis and buses are not far away). But that airport's only 20 years old and the railway was included in the original design.

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Is there any data to show how many people travel from the airport on Heathrow Express compared to the other direction? Heathrow Airport heavily promote HEx in the departure area, and I'm sure a lot of visitors do then use it again, but others will discover the alternatives whilst in London...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Everyone has their opinions, and it's no surprise that the owners of the airport would argue in favour of the Heathrow Express. However, they don't know how many passengers would choose an alternative method of transport, and Crossrail will surely increase the total number of people going to...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

It's only 22 minutes from Paddington to Heathrow (T2 & T3) on a stopping train, so toilets shouldn't really be an issue. Once the service becomes more frequent I'd expect more people to choose it over the Heathrow Express (though we still don't know the fares to be charged). Until December...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Well, perhaps it's better to say that it's a premium priced service, and some people willingly pay for it whether travelling on business or for leisure. As Richard H. Thaler might say, Econs would totally separate the cost of the flight from the cost of transportation to/from the airport (and...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

I agree. I have taken the Piccadilly line to the airport in the afternoon and even then it was horribly crowded. Crossrail should help reduce this problem, but not if fares are too high - and Mikey C makes a good suggestion for solving this problem.

    Sorry, I got that wrong.

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

I'm intrigued. Do TfL describe the District Line as an east-west railway? Let's stop as this is totally off-topic.

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

There are already barriers on the Piccadilly line and it's free to travel between terminals if you use an Oyster card or Contactless, or you can buy a ticket for £4.90. Over 60s already have to pay on some services (e.g. National Rail before 9.30 am) and so these Oyster cards can have...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Obviously there is a substantial section of the District Line (from Turnham Green to Upminster) that is indeed east-west. But the branch from Edgware Road to Wimbledon is basically north-south, as shown on the tube map or Wikipedia or http://carto.metro.free.fr

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

My route's a bit more complicated than that :D and I have previously used the HEx (back when I thought the Piccadilly Line was too slow). With Crossrail, the Farringdon interchange with Thameslink becomes an option, which is what I'd expect the TFL Journey Planner to recommend. I might even...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Bangkok has suspended the express service (when I last used it there were less than 10 people on board - and no taxis waiting at the station - so I think we know why). The standard non-express service is still operating.

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Sorry, that must have been peak. Even cheaper!

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

It is, but I was quite surprised how cheap it is to go from Heathrow to a Zone 5 station on the other side of London. By avoiding Zone 1, it's only £2.70. Not that the TFL journey planner will ever recommend it to you!!
  15. I

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Yes, I didn't express myself very well there. I was trying to say that it isn't necessarily slower, and also that it's much cheaper if you can avoid Zone 1. Which I typically do by changing to the southbound District Line at Earls Court.

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

Unfortunately there have been some cases (sorry) of luggage being stolen from the airport buses when passengers are on the upper deck enjoying the good views. As a visitor I have used the Heathrow Express to get to Central London, and I used to think that the Piccadilly line was ridiculously...

Is Heathrow Express a good use of resources?

A single ticket from Hong Kong Airport - Central on the Airport Express is HK$115 and the same distance on a regular MTR service costs about HK$25.

Problems using a Britrail pass on London Overground (denied travel)

I fear that we are veering way off topic here, but that's correct - according to the Daily Express: Before the handover, 50,000 selected Hong Kongers, mainly white-collar professionals and civil servants, were given British passports. They also issued a large number of BNO passports that...

Problems using a Britrail pass on London Overground (denied travel)

I can say that I have presented a British passport for validation of a Britrail pass several times and had no problem (last time was September 2016). I would happily produce evidence that I live in Hong Kong but I have never been asked for it! The ACPRail site does specify on their T&C...

Problems using a Britrail pass on London Overground (denied travel)

Yes, because it doesn't make sense for them to say that you need proof of residence and then say that they will only accept passports! One of the companies selling Britrail passes did announce that they were only available to holders of non-UK passports, but that's not what it says in the...
