    Nicknames of Multiple Unit Trains

This thread would not be complete without a mention of the Thumpers! The class 201 - 207 Southern Region DEMUs, nicknamed Thumpers thanks to the distinctive thumping engine noise.

EMT Class 158 coupling and uncoupling procedure at Nottingham

I wouldn't call a brake continuity test and pull away test red tape.. but hey ho!

    Pendolino seating vs LNER stock

The original MK2s... Loads of different window layouts for different purposes and still monocoque construction, infact a pioneer for BR! That rules that argument out.

    Kepi-style BR caps

It's a shame these caps are not common these days with modern TOCs, much better for identifying staff from a distance than a tacky high vis vest!

    Internal lighting of heritage coaches

We externally charge them too whilst stabled in the platform where we can plug them in, though not through the lighting socket we plug ours into where the generator would normally be plugged into. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- That would be ideal as with the generator running...

Class 68 Progress, what's the latest?

Even in Chiltern the front ends are horrible!

    Questions about driving trains.

Not relevant for any passenger MU designs from the Class 313 onwards (could be earlier if the 50xs were earlier) that use Westcode electronic braking equipment. The basics of how it all works (auto brake only) is still relevant for majority of freight trains, loco haul trains and HSTs. Though...

    Internal lighting of heritage coaches

I'm a carriage & wagon fitter (as well as a few other things) at the Epping Ongar Railway and to put it simply, rather than relying on the old dynamo style method we have fitted a generator to the underneath of a carriage which provides electricity for the carriage lighting. This can provide...

Boris Johnson proposes Stratford to be in Zones 2 & 3

Zone 2 into 1? You must be joking, defeats the point of why people use the pink interchange readers to show they are avoiding Zone 1!

Network Rail unable to close 'danger crossing' in Poole

Only in this sodding country can a fully gated automatic level crossing be called dangerous! Japan has thousands of these level crossings in the middle of cities and towns normally on very busy commuter lines and they're not classed as dangerous! I think rather than simply getting rid of level...

    Ultra 73s

What on earth is that cab! Tram style controls seem to be all the rage atm with the 68 and that 700 thing! I take it theyre gonna re-fit the buckeye as the rubbing plate is still in place and the pin to hold it up is dangling!

    Track noise

Most likely sound echoing along the rails, even on continuous welded rail you can hear the train passing over where the rails are joined as well as expansion joints of course and dont forgot points!

"craziest" rail related thing you've done to your home ...

Hmm my room... A60/62 stock luggage rack (small) above bed, actually very useful! Big white hardboard board with various LU waterslide transfers on, Met line (A stock) car line diagram as well as a Bakerloo line one running along top of the walls, 67/72TS 'Central London Journey Planner' stuck...

    Colas/ TNT Fast Freight trial?

Do like the sound of this, hopefully more successful than the last time those Motorail vans were used on a freight trial into Euston!

    Smashed screen: Nokia Lumia

Mine must be made of something galactic as my 1020 recently dropped on its corner onto ballast from my pocket climbing into a loco, at that point I even thought f**k as that was the worst drop i've had of a phone but the only damage is literally a dent to the top left corner

    Smashed screen: Nokia Lumia

You smashed a Lumia screen?! I've regularly dropped my phone, both my both previous Lumia 800 and current 1020 from various heights onto ballast, concrete etc and never had a problem!

Buckeye couplers, tell tale pin on SR MUs

Wait, with all this talk about electrical connections etc, does this mean you need one to get a brake release when coupling onto an electrically broken or dead unit or is an air connection sufficient?

Buckeye couplers, tell tale pin on SR MUs

Sorry I should have made it clearer, I meant the MK1 based which do/did use buckeye couplers! Interesting to learn about the procedures on more modern stock though. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Thank you :)
